Akira has been founded in 2011 with the goal to build a dog shelter in the towns of Benissa/Teulada on the Costa Blanca in Spain. End of 2013 we obtained the land from the Town Hall of Benissa, in 2014 the contract was signed between the Town Halls of Benissa and Teulada and Akira and end of 2014 the excavation of the land has been done. Beginning of 2015 we finally received the building licence.

The shelter has been designed by an architect, it will give space to 80 dogs. Since the start of Akira we have been able to save and rehome more then 300 dogs eventhough we did not have a shelter yet. Money is being raised by organising events, with our second hand shop, on the market with the sale of second hand books and through donations. We have been able to raise 100.000 euro in 4 years, but are still missing 25.000 euro to finalise the project.

We desperately want to open the doors of the shelter, so many dogs are wandering the streets. There is so much sorrow. Most of the dogs found on the streets are going to killing stations.

We often find dogs in a very bad state who have been left behind by hunters or by people who returned to their country. Some are only skin and bones, dehydrated, some have broken bones or collars grown into their neck. We have found puppies in plastic bags in rubbish bins, dogs hung up in the trees in the forest, left on the side of the road after an accident and still alive...

We hope with the crowdfunding to raise the extra needed money so that we can finally open the doors of this so badly needed shelter.
