Half the Way Home hasn't added a story.
At four months old, Carrie had lots of plans for her life. She planned to chase bugs (and maybe even taste one), laze in the sunlight, and live happily ever after with a loving family. But through a series of unfortunate events, those plans of warm afternoons and cozy nights ended. Carrie found herself on the streets, dragging a horribly broken back leg while she desperately tried to survive. This was no life for a kitten—indeed, it was no life for any living being.
Carrie was lucky in a way: Animal Control picked her up off the streets. But that luck was a mixed bag. While she was safe from predators and cars and other dangers, now she was in an equally dangerous situation where she could be euthanized at any time for space.
Half the Way Home heard Carrie's story and came to the rescue. On Thursday, Dec. 29th, our team worked tirelessly to transport Carrie through Atlanta's notorious rush hour traffic to get her to the safety of a foster. The next morning, Carrie had her first real vet visit with one of our fantastic veterinary partners.
The diagnosis is bad. Carrie's leg was fractured in multiple spots on her tibia and metatarsal bones. One of the fractures was so severe that it has pierced her skin. There is no way for the vet to determine how old the injury is, and the risk of infection is incredibly high. To save her life, there is no choice but to amputate Carrie's leg.
Throughout it all, Carrie has been the world's very best kitten. She purred so hard during her vet visit that the vet had trouble being able to listen to her heart. She even batted at a paper scrap while at the vet, playing as best she could. At her foster home, Carrie always asks her foster nicely for snuggles. She just wants to sit in a warm lap, purring and kneading. Despite the unimaginable pain she must be going through, Carrie has been a beacon of love and joy: She is just happy to have been rescued.
So far, we have spent $152 and change to get X-rays for a diagnosis and pain medication and antibiotics to keep Carrie comfortable through the New Year's holiday. She is scheduled to have her right hind leg amputated on January 4th. The vet estimates it will be around another $1,000 (rescue discount included) to complete Carrie's amputation surgery, spay her, and give her the vetting she needs.
We are trying to raise $1,100 to cover the majority of Carrie's surgery and vetting costs. Please, can you help us to help this sweet little girl?

Half the Way Home, Inc., is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit cat rescue. We focus on Georgia's forgotten cats, the cats no other rescues will save from Animal Control due to their condition, age, behavior, or expected cost. Little Carrie would have had no chance at Animal Control without Half the Way Home. Her leg is so badly injured that no other rescue wanted to take on the surgery cost. But that's why Half the Way Home exists, to help babies like Carrie, who would have otherwise been euthanized just because of her non-life-threatening injuries.
All donations for Carrie are 100% tax deductible, and they will help to make sure that this precious kitten is happy, healthy, and ultimately will be able to find a loving forever home. Please help us give Carrie a new life and new hope by donating towards her surgery bill today!
