WHY ARE WE HERE?
Great cities have always been built by their citizens. But today’s social and political environment prevents them from being built at all. As a result, affordability, walkability, and inclusiveness suffer.
We’re launching Southern Urbanism Quarterly to help change all that. This journal will give voice to the citybuilders of the South—all who have skin in the game of building the places we love: the tradespeople, the designers, the artists, the entrepreneurs.
WHAT ARE WE UP AGAINST?
The South is the last region to urbanize, creating a unique set of opportunities and challenges. Although the South has nearly 130 million people, there is no discursive hub for those building its cities. It will be a challenge to cut through the noise, but Southern Urbanism Quarterly is committed to serving this community, and that’s why we have assembled an extraordinary team including art direction, editing, journalism, and front-line experience.

Mission:
- Southern Urbanism supports the citybuilders of the South. Its mission is to build the citizens who build our cities.
- The company is a mission-based 501(c)3 nonprofit organization that works with practitioners to enable the development of better cities, bring practical expertise back to the discourse, inform community leaders, and generate a tidal wave of young industry professionals across the region.
Vision:
- Southern Urbanism is led by the practicing professionals who are designing and constructing the built environment. Its focus is the urban areas of the southeastern United States. Through various media, Southern Urbanism re-establishes a positive voice for citybuilding in the region. It provides data-driven, experiential arguments to act as a counterweight to the spurious and anecdotal voices that currently dominate the conversation.
- The company targets two distinct audiences: the citybuilders and the policymakers who enable citybuilding. It broadcasts clear and simple messaging and meets citizen change agents and policymakers at multiple media touchpoints. Southern Urbanism articulates what good citybuilding looks like and leads specific action to enable it on the local level.
