Make Music Vancouver is an entirely free live music event that brings the local community together on June 25th, with the beginning of summer!
On Make Music day, Water Street is shut down to traffic and is transformed into sidewalk stages and dance floors, showcasing Vancouver’s incredible cultural and artistic diversity.
This grassroots event is being made possible entirely by volunteers, from organizers to performers. It showcases hundreds of amateur and established musicians, and celebrates music in all its diversity.
The first-ever edition was a resounding success, bringing 150 bands and 20 000 spectators to the streets of Gastown on June 21st 2011.

Make Music Vancouver is a free event open to all, and we want to keep it free! All the people making it happen, from organizers to musicians, are volunteers donating their time and skills.

MAKE MUSIC VANCOUVER
Make Music Vancouver is a free grassroots open air music event based on three basic principles:
- Free live concerts for everyone, in all types of locations, including some unusual ones;
- A showcase of musical diversity involving all musical genres;
- A celebration of the participation of all kinds of musicians, amateurs and professionals alike.
Make Music Vancouver is based on the international concept entitled “Fête de la Musique” which was created in 1982 in France and is currently taking place yearly in over 100 countries and 450 cities every June 21st.
ALL KINDS OF MUSIC; A WIDE AUDIENCE
Make Music Vancouver is above all a free grassroots event, open to any participant (amateur or professional musician) who wants to take part in it. This Music Day allows the expression of all styles of music in a cheerful atmosphere. It is aimed at a wide audience - young and not so young people - from all social backgrounds. It gives everyone an opportunity to share and celebrate music.
A FREE AND OPEN EVENT
Musicians are asked to perform for free - mostly in open air areas - and all the concerts are free to the public.
Make Music Vancouver is also a way to encourage major music institutions (orchestras, opera troupes, choirs, etc.) to perform outside of their usual locations.
A SIGNATURE EVENT FOR VANCOUVER
Over the past few years, the local cultural scene has become increasingly vibrant. The highly successful first three editions of Make Music Vancouver showed that the residents of Vancouver welcome the opportunity to take an active part in such an event that showcases the dynamism and creativity of local communities. The idea is to make it a perennial event on the City of Vancouver cultural calendar every summer in June.

- Is there a cost for this event? Do I need tickets?
No, that’s the whole point! Make Music Vancouver is entirely free and open to all. It’s a grassroots, community event lead entirely by volunteers, from organizers to performers. Nobody is being paid or charged to participate.
- What type of musicians will be playing? which musical genre?
Another thing we love about Make Music Vancouver is that it’s all about celebrating music in all its diversity. There are so many ways we can express ourselves through music, and that’s what we want to share at this event. Just so you know, our sign-up sheet for musicians has a drop-down menu for “musical genre” with a dozen options – including “other”!
- Who’s playing when and where?
The spirit of Make Music Vancouver is to wander the neighborhood and let yourself be surprised and swept off your feet by the music you encounter. You may find yourself really enjoying a performer whose musical genre you didn’t think you liked! The event will take place on Water Street, which will be closed to traffic, thereby creating a huge outdoor space for us to play in! At the top of each hour, all the groups will change and be replaced by new groups. We will not be distributing a program or schedule, but if you’re looking for a particular group you know is performing, you are welcome to ask a volunteer for information.
- What if it rains?
It doesn’t matter! Come out anyway! This is a rain or shine event. There will be tents to protect musicians and their equipment from any liquid sunshine. As for spectators… well, here’s your chance to show everyone your “singing in the rain” dance moves!
- Is this a Francophone event?
Make Music Vancouver was inspired by an event launched in France in 1982 called la Fete de la Musique, but it is not a francophone event and you do not need to speak French to participate! The spirit of Make Music Vancouver is to celebrate music in all its diversity, and the event will be a true reflection of Vancouver’s communities and cultures. Many of the volunteer organizers are francophone due to the event’s origins, and there will be some francophone musicians, but they will be only one piece of a rich multicultural event!
- Do you need volunteers?
We sure do! The event is being entirely organized by volunteers. Last year we had over a hundred volunteers donate their time and skills, and this year, which is going to be bigger and better, we’ll need even more. There are lots of ways you can get involved – please check our volunteer opportunities.
- I would like to play on June 25th – how do I make that happen?
Awesome, we’d love to have you perform! Unfortunately the registration is closed, but mark your calendar to register for next year.
- Where did the idea for Make Music Vancouver come from?
Make Music Vancouver is inspired by la Fête de la Musique, a music celebration launched in France in 1982 which has since gone global. Read more about the History and journey of this event – it’s fascinating!
- Who is organizing Make Music Vancouver?
The event is being organized entirely by volunteers from two non-profit cultural associations, Vancouver en Français and the Alliance Française de Vancouver.
