Polis Pound - Dog Rescue hasn't added a story.
We need a little help to cover the vet bills for Spot - here is his story....
Spot was found wandering the streets, with who we believe could be his dad - Snowy. They were hanging around a bin on a busy road, completely oblivious to the danger they were in. Luckily a member of the public managed to get them into their car and called us for help! On arrival to the pound we were so relived to find out that Snowy had a microchip... just a case of 2 escaped dogs, or so we thought! On contacting the owners they informed us that they didn't want either of them back! No reasons, they surrendered ownership to Polis Pound.
It was immediately obvious that something wasn't quite right with Spot, he was reluctant to really move around anywhere if he could help it. In his kennel he would sit on his back legs like a Meerkat. Visually you could see both his front legs were slightly pointing outwards, so we suspected he possibly had a growth issue in his bones - we were wrong! Later that day Spot suffered a seizure, and we just knew there was something more to this, so we took him to our vets for an evaluation.
Our vet performed x-rays immediately. Spot had 2 broken front legs - 4 bones in each leg were snapped. This wasn't a new injury - he had been like this for possibly up to 4 weeks, and the bones couldn't heal due to the location of the break. Poor Spot would have been in an incredible amount of pain, all masked by his beautiful personality and constant wagging tail! No wonder he didn't want to put any weight on them. We also suspect due to the nature of the break and the lack of any other injury this wasn't likely to have been caused by a car accident, and more likely to have been inflicted! The reason he found himself being surrendered?
Spot underwent surgery on both legs, pins were put in each of the 4 breaks on both legs. As Spot needed to stay with both legs in a cast, calm quite and dry and no foster could be found he spent 3 week at the vets recovering. During this time he suffered several more seizures. There is a chance that when he sustained the injury to his legs he also experienced a head trauma and a swelling is causing the fits. We are hopeful this will stop once he is fully recovered. There is also a chance he may have epilepsy, which is a condition that can be very easily controlled with medication. For now he is on a temporary course of medication to stop seizures and allow him time to heal - then he will be re-evaluated.
We are happy to report Spot is now in a foster home, he is now out of his casts and recovering well! Spot is just the most beautiful, loving boy. He just craves love and affection - hes been through so much already in his 6 months! When he is fully healed we cant wait to find him a family that will give him as much love as he gives everyone he meets!
The total cost for his medical treatment is €800, as a dog rescue that runs completely on volunteers and donations this is a huge cost for us to cover. If you can help us in any way we would be so unbelievably grateful! Every donation no matter the amount will make a huge difference.
A big thank you for your support from our amazing team of Polis Pound volunteers - and of course from little Spot!
