Kona Connect

Kona Connect

Kona Connect is a women-led non-profit founded amidst Covid-19 in April 2020. It’s vision is to connect human rights and artificial intelligence (AI) to empower individuals in vulnerable situations through practical tools and to create dynamic, creative, and community-oriented technologies by combining AI, the law, and human-centred knowledge.

Founder Rhiana Spring

Rhiana Spring is an award-winning international human rights expert and an entrepreneur ( WEF Award Exceptional Women of Excellence 2019, and Finalist of the FemBiz Award 2021 for Sophia ). Rhiana has worked for the United Nations, Swiss Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and diverse NGOs and legal teams. She has defended the most vulnerable individuals and spearheaded multinational human rights projects across Africa, Asia, South America, and Europe. currently works as a Legal Officer to the African Union’s Peace and Security Department. She speaks five languages and holds three law degrees from the London School of Economics and Oxford Brookes University. At the age of 17, Rhiana set up her first IT business, after having taught herself to programme.

The Origins

In 2017, while working for the United Nations in West Africa, five refugees turned up at Rhiana’s office looking for help with many pressing issues, including enrolling a child into school. Rhiana decided to turn to her network to get refugees the help they needed and three different solutions were discovered within one weekend. Inspired by this turn of events, Rhiana started to develop a tool which would help people in vulnerable situations, to find the help they require through a technology that can automatically direct them to the right resource.

Though, upon the emergence of the worldwide COVID-19 pandemic in early 2020, there has been a drastic rise of violence against women.  Rhiana, with some of her friends, adapted the technology to domestic violence and “Sophia” – the world’s first chatbot assisting survivors of domestic violence collect potential evidence and seek help – was born. With  the help of dozens of committed volunteers from all over the world, they quickly moved to get “Sophia” up and running.

Sophia: The world's first messaging chatbot empowering survivors of domestic violence

The entire team of volunteers have been working on “Sophia” for the past 1.5 years, the world’s first chatbot developed to empower survivors of domestic violence gather potential evidence and get support. Without funding, however, it won’t be possible to launch “Sophia” safely. Right now is the perfect moment to donate for the launch of “Sophia”, as the contributions will help Rhiana and the team to possibly secure a matching grant in August, which means that every contribution will have 2 times  the impact.

More than 1 in 4 women globally and possibly up to 1 in 7 men in their lifetime experience domestic violence. However the dark figure, the real number of survivors who never report the abuse, is yet to be uncovered.
Globally, less than 40% of female survivors ever seek help or report, and less than 10% go to the police. Upon the emergence of the global COVID-19 pandemic in early 2020, lockdowns around the world led to a corresponding drastic rise in domestic violence, trapping survivors at home with their abusers.

“Sophia" is the world’s first chatbot programmed to empower survivors of domestic violence to Gather potential evidence, Assess their rights, and Learn about their options (GAL). Regardless of location, connecting with Sophia only requires a smartphone, computer, or tablet with internet access and a messaging app. Without needing to download anything, survivors can receive 24*7 valuable assistance from Sophia without leaving a digital trace (unlike an app that abusers might find), or an overuse of mobile data which might be in short supply.

Immediately upon launch, users will have access to a personal and secure “digital safe” (i.e. server space) as well as access to practical legal and local information wherever they are in the world. By working with on-the-ground domestic violence organisations, legal advocates and survivors themselves, Sophia will be tailored to local laws and practices and the needs of the survivors to direct them to the right sources for help. "Sophia" has deliberately been programmed to be instantly scalable to any country in the world with the right funding and local partners – some of whom have already reached out to express interest in implementing Sophia in their own countries. With the help of committed volunteers from all over the world, Kona has already prepared the backend and initial text for “Sophia”, and the prototype is ready to be tested.
