Thanks for making our point of why the Sharing Tails Program is so important!
Between January 2009 and May 2011, Sharing Tails provided free, state-wide public outreach and education to kindergarten through second grade students about Arizona’s native fishes.
Sharing Tails was created to bring awareness of native fishes to Arizona residents, including knowledge about the threats to their survival.
After funding for Sharing Tails ended, Marsh Education formed in 2013 as a not-for-profit 501(c)3 branch of Marsh & Associates LLC, which enabled the Sharing Tails program to resume classroom visits during the 2015-2016 school year.
And we've been teaching Arizona's kids about fish like the humpback chub ever since!
Sharing Tails is now a fee-based program, but through continued fundraising, donations, grants, and a pivot to virtual, "fish lady" Carol Pacey brings this vital opportunity for learning to Kindergarten through 2nd grade classrooms all over the state.
Public outreach is important because out of the 36 fish species native to Arizona, one species is already extinct, 34 are identified as Species of Greatest Conservation Need in Arizona, and 20 are federally-listed as endangered or threatened.
Many factors contribute to their decline, but Government agencies, conservation organizations, and community members have been working to restore native fish populations.
Current information provided by local, private organizations, and state and federal agencies indicate that awareness about native fish in Arizona is...
"lacking, viewed as uninteresting, and is
intermittent" at best.
Public outreach and education to school-age children is critical for native fish conservation and recovery because they potentially could become future stewards and advocates of Arizona’s unique native species!

The Humpback Chub is an endangered fish found in Arizona, most notably at the Colorado and Little Colorado rivers in the Grand Canyon.
