Ollie's Angels Animal Rescue hasn't added a story.
Quite possibly one of the sweetest, most loving dogs we've ever rescued, Ruby didn't have much of a chance when she was born. In-utero, Ruby's mother passed to her a parasite called Neospora Caninum. If caught early and treated properly, the prognosis for pups infected with this parasite is often quite hopeful; unfortunately, this was not the case for Ruby, and by the time we got her to NY, she had entirely lost the use of her back legs, and her front legs were beginning to weaken. This is a very rare condition, and it took many different veterinary consults until we finally met with a wonderful neurologist who was able to properly diagnose her. Through the use of several medications, Ruby's front legs are now much stronger. Her foster home has a pool, and her foster mom has her swimming, which has done wonders to strengthen her front limbs. Unfortunately, Ruby's back legs are not only paralyzed, but they are also stick straight and cannot be bent at all. She is now developing open sores on her back legs because despite her disability, Ruby is determined to be on the go. Our veterinarian (as well as all of us who love her!) strongly feels that her quality of life will be greatly improved with the removal of her back legs. She will be able to properly use the wheelchair we purchased for her, and she no longer will be dragging around useless limbs. She is now also very susceptible to infection in the open sores on her legs. Our veterinarian is willing to help by greatly discounting the surgery, but it is still going to be very costly. On top of the wheelchair and the many medical appointments, we have spent several thousands of dollars in our quest to make Ruby as healthy and happy as possible. We are asking for any donation you may be able to give. Every penny helps!
