Joe here from Grim. When I was teaching and started these walking tours in 2011 I did my best to put together the kind of history tour with learning and seeing things for adults at night that I’d always wanted to take myself, but never could find anywhere when I was traveling. I must have done a decent-enough job I suppose because the year after I started Anthony Bourdain came out to a tour with me, the large franchises and museums started offering night hours, others followed, and Trip Advisor recognized us as #1 and created a category specifically for us: “Ghost and Vampire.”
After a long winter off-season as we were re-opening for 2020 the world-wide pandemic and concerns over the health and safety of our guests forced us to close our doors entirely through the 4th of July; ordinarily our busy season with tourists and schools who we'd refunded. We have received close to nothing in loan assistance from the federal government and are not entitled to state unemployment. Tourism (our sector of the economy) is operating under 10% normal capacity.
A lot of you who are local head out to one of our walking tours every year. Many of you come in the fall.
We have been allowed by the government to reopen. We are socially distancing, wearing masks; we have paperless check-in. We are running only the open-air safest, outdoor, walking tours that we have. The problem is: with travel-bans and the very understandable reluctance to take part in activities: no one is actually purchasing anything and our guides have been all out of work still since November, after our last fall-season.
What we are asking is that if there is any chance you might plan to take a walking tour with us at any future point—be it in two days, ten years, or this fall--a donation here is a place-saver for that.
