Before you go, did you know that simply by sharing this campaign, you could help it raise $30? It's an effective way to support the cause.
No thanksThe Ke'nekt Cooperative hasn't added a story.
My name is Kiyomi Rollins who is based in Southwest Atlanta.
I am a community stakeholder, wife, mom & small business owner.
My business & home are located within the historic community of Westview &
minutes away from legacy communities of West End, Spelman, Morehouse, Clark, ITC & Morris Brown.
Along with the rich heritage & legacy that exists, Atlanta is also ranked 4th in the nation as one of the fastest gentrifying cities.
I have witnessed firsthand the displacement of fellow community Mom & Pop business owners. I have also, witnessed the inequitable commercial real estate opportunities created by such rapid development. The objective of many "new developments" is very clear, as oftentimes there is a complete erasure of "Old Atlanta," i.e, Black Folks in the renderings or collateral material.
Recently, I found myself on the receiving end of a "Notice of Intent to Evict" letter for my business.
Reeling from the emotional impact of displacement firsthand, slowly the realization that no one is coming to save us, but us sinks in.
What If .... we can create a space where we disrupt the current power structure of inequity in commercial real estate in Atlanta?
What if...we can transform our communities by preserving Legacy Black Owned Businesses in Atlanta through creative cooperative economic models?
What If...we Dream. Plan & Ke'nekt?
It is important that communities create their own collaborative cooperative business communities consisting of social entrepreneurs with a commitment to the community where they are located.
The Ke'nekt will be an intentional & equitable space that will allow established legacy businesses, start up concepts & micro pop ups to occupy a cooperative space that fosters business education and growth. The Ke'nekt's primary focus will be businesses who find themselves challenged to secure the mainstream traditional commercial opportunities. Our objective is to provide sustainable lease opportunities for up to 13 businesses, as well as, promote business ownership through financial literacy & technical assistance.
We are seeking Funding support to launch the 1st Cooperative
Economics Retail Incubator in Atlanta .
Our Capitol Campaign Goal is 75k.
The objective of the capitol campaign is to convert a 2000 sq foot building originally built in 1954 & used as a former garage to a mixed retail/food hall space.
The Ke'nekt Capitol Campaign is needed to support the costs associated with the conversion of the former garage to a retail/food hall space, building maintenance & build out & technical assistance.
The Ke'nekt will consist of diverse like-minded individuals and businesses who have a cooperative focus on creating sustainable community through mindful engagement and collective action. The cooperative model will allow the community to leverage scale while creating employment and mentorship opportunities. Businesses will participate in cooperative purchasing, shared resources (including staff), and back office support while, creating an environment where entrepreneurs are mentored to avoid the pitfalls of ownership.
In order to foster sustainability, we are developing an anchor strategy with community stakeholders The Good Hair Shop & Koinoinia Coffee will be relocating to The Ke'nekt .
Businesses who are members of The Ke'nekt must also have an active commitment to training & hiring from within the community & AUC students.
All businesses will be expected to use the cooperative model to share responsibility for employees, purchasing supplies, training & cooperative health care between tenants.
We got what we need to save us.
Lets Plan.... Dream & Ke'nekt!
