One World School, Inc. hasn't added a story.
I am happy to share with you that this May 31, 2017, One World School will complete its 4th school year! What an incredible journey this has been for me and for everyone who has been involved in our community for the past few years.
Thank you so much for supporting the dream of One World School. Your support will make the continuous growth of our school possible. When we opened our doors in June 2013, we had 15 students and a handful of teachers and therapists. Almost four years later, over 70 students and almost 40 teachers and therapists call One World School their 2nd home. Thank you for taking part in making this possible!
Please allow me to share with you the story of Julian, one of our students. When I asked one of his teachers to describe Julian when he enrolled two years ago, he said, “Julian was reserved and distrustful.” Why such strong words to describe a then 13 year-old boy? During his first few months at school, Julian carried this dark cloud over his head, which was often misinterpreted as defiance, ambivalence, and sometimes anger. There was good reason for this. In his former school, Julian was bullied by classmates and treated by teachers as if incapable of learning. His self-esteem was destroyed.
When he was accepted into One World School, we knew we had our work cut out for us. Academic and socio-emotional supports were immediately put in place for Julian. Though he could not associate positive words or thoughts with school, he attended his classes with us everyday. It was as if he was hoping for or at least looking for another chance. On one of my classroom visits, I decided to join the game he was playing with his classmates and teacher. To make it exciting, we decided there would be a prize for the winner – food! I won this game, and Julian promised to bring me my prize the following day. I never expected to see it, but at 7:00 AM the next day, he walked into my office with my prize – hot pockets he had purchased the night before.
Shortly afterwards, I met with his teachers and discussed that our work with Julian was actually to bring back all the good that had been buried under the trauma he had to endure at his former school. We all believed that Julian was a smart, talented, and kind-hearted boy. He just had to see and believe it again. And so that’s what his team of teachers at school did for the next two years. They created ways for Julian to be successful. Like a bird with new wings, Julian took off! He took his studies seriously, shared his talent in music with his teachers and classmates, worked on developing his skills in visual arts, started to learn how to speak Tagalog, became more physically fit, was elected the first Student Council President, and played a leading part in the school’s Thanksgiving Celebration Production. Many of the younger students now see him as a big brother. He started to trust again.
We have a ways to go to bring out Julian’s full potential, and his story is just one of 70 more that makes One World School a very special place. Julian’s story was made possible by the dedication of his teachers and parents, and the hope that he would love school once again.
It was also made possible by the generous support One World School has received in the past few years by donors such as yourself. There is an ever present need for a school like ours in Manila. Thanks to your donations, we have been able to build a school where children of all abilities can learn and feel safe they will be accepted as they are and treated with the respect everyone deserves.
As more local and international families discover One World School, our enrollment and programs continue to grow. So many children with special needs fail and are rejected, bullied, expelled, or just left out in many schools. One World School welcomes so many of these children with open arms, promising that they will thrive and learn together with their typically developing classmates.
Within the next few months, One World School will begin its next facilities expansion project. This includes the addition of classrooms, a multi-purpose hall, outdoor playground, and parking spaces. When this project is complete, we will be able to add the middle and high school programs to our existing elementary school. With your continued support, One World School will be able to provide for more students who need a school like ours, a school that gives hope. To date, we are the only school in Manila that welcomes and educates a full range of children of all abilities, including those with significant special education needs, gifted and talented students, and those who just learn differently.
At this time, I would like to ask if you would like to support our facilities expansion project by making a donation. Your entire donation will be used to purchase construction materials, classroom furniture and appliances, and/or the cost of labor.
