Edmonton, Alberta – May 2, 2013 Edmontonian Raemonde Bezenar, will be competing in the International Peace Marathon in Kigali, Rwanda on May 19th, 2013. The 42 km marathon is organized by the Rwanda Athletic Federation and participants run around the Amahoro Stadium.

“I am running the marathon in a full gorilla suit to raise awareness on the plight of the mountain gorilla. I plan to inspire the local people, who play a key role in the survival of this magnificent animal and to let them know that people from around the globe are here to help,” says Raemonde Bezenar, Executive Director of Canadian Friends of the Mountain Gorilla Veterinary Project. "Mountain gorillas do not survive in captivity and only 480 here in Rwanda, it’s essential to educate the local community about the animals survival”.

Canadian Friends of MGVP is an Alberta charitable organization supporting the life saving work of the Mountain Gorilla Veterinary Project (MGVP, Inc.). Through the MGVP “ONE HEALTH” program, we support the needs of people, wildlife and the environment through health care, education, research and service. MGVP was founded at the request of the late Dr. Dian Fossey in 1986 and has helped to increase the mountain gorilla population from 248 to an estimated 880 that are alive today.

Bezenar, Race Director of the local based, “Edmonton Gorilla Run” a 5K FUN RUN / WALK / WHEELS scheduled for September 7, 2013. Everyone who registers runs in a gorilla suit, included with registration and yours to keep. Entering its 4th year, we are expanding the event to be a “picnic in the park”, with music, entertainment and great food.
