Rescued Loggerhead Sea Turtle, Allie, has been recovering and gaining strength at Gulf Specimen Marine Lab since May 15, 2012. The 227 lbs. sea turtle was found floating in Alligator Harbor sick and unable to dive or feed. Local fishermen pulled her from the water and brought her to Gulf Specimen to save her life.

Many aquarium visitors and school children have enjoyed meeting Allie and watching her progress. Though she resembled a half-sunk ship when she came to us, Allie can now chase blue crab around the tank. With a shell measuring 42 in long, her snack-chasing speed is quite a sight! Soon she will be well enough to return to the wild. If all goes well, we anticipate a May-June 2013 release.

A unique educational opportunity is upon us, one we need your help to accomplish. Your donation could enable the purchase of satellite tracking equipment for Allie and development of a dynamic sea turtle educational program. School groups and other visitors that have established a relationship with Allie will track her movements on a global map, learning about biology, geography, hydrology and endangered species preservation. Anyone interested in Allie will also be able to keep up with her global travels on our Facebook page.

With just two months to go until her anticipated release, we’ll need all the help we can get to make this exciting experience a reality for our local school children and worldwide Allie fans. Our funding goal is $5,000. You can make a donation through our Facebook page www.facebook.com/GulfSpecimenMarineLab
or by contacting Gulf Specimen at 850-984-5297, 222 Clark Drive, Panacea, FL 32346.

Gulf Specimen Marine Lab is the only licensed sea turtle rehabilitation facility in North Florida, and the longest-running facility of its kind in the state.
