fa.
impossibile dal vero perché all'epoca erano pochi e quasi sempre
caricamento programmi), enormi mainframe Sperry Univac completi
Grazie! E condividete con tutti i vostri amici.
The Computer Museum has a great mission, which we have been carrying out for over 30 years: to save the history of computing from destruction and make it available to future generations. Already tens of thousands of pieces are safe.
We perform an average of 50 rescues per year, throughout Italy and neighbouring European countries, which we manage using exclusively our resources, both human work and personal finances. However, sometimes the tasks are extraordinary, as in this specific case.
We are about to save an enormous quantity of extremely rare
machines, some of which may be unique, dating back as far as 70
years.
These are systems that one might see in old
films, television documentaries, archival footage, but are almost
impossible to find in real life because at their times, they were
few, and in almost all cases they were scrapped when no longer useful.
Among the equipment to be saved are machines from both IBM and Remington Rand for the creation and management of punch cards (one of the earliest methods of loading programs), huge Sperry Univac mainframes complete with their tape units, disks, and printers, as well as the earliest Olivetti systems. All the machines are in astonishingly good condition and perhaps, with good care, even functional.
The total amount is of nearly 100 machines, several tons in
weight, and 70 square metres of occupied space.
Therefore three large lorries are required for transportation,
all more than 700 km from our headquarters.
If we don't save these systems now, they will surely be
scrapped.
Luckily for us, the personnel involved understand the
historical importance of these machines and are facilitating us in
every possible way.
It's our mission, and we will do it... but the operation will
have a very high human and economic cost.
That's why we absolutely need your contribution to cover the expenses.
If you're reading this appeal, you're surely among the enthusiasts of these technologies that have brought us to contemporary progress, and you've probably realised the paramount importance of this rescue operation to preserve computer history for future generations.
All those who contribute to supporting this incredible rescue operation will be mentioned on a commemorative plaque that will be placed in the new section that will be added to the Museum to house these machines.
In addition to donating through this platform, you can also
contribute through the usual channels, listed at this page.
All donations are tax-deductible as they are made to a
non-profit organisation.
Don't leave us alone! Thank you! And share with your friends.
