sutton trout hasn't added a story.
The sun was a raw, insistent orange as it clawed its way over the ridge, painting the dewy fields in a light that felt both ancient and brand new. Sutton adjusted his helmet, the familiar click a comforting sound against the pre-dawn stillness. Ten years. Ten years of this. Ten years of the same brutal, beautiful climbs.
He remembered the first year, the raw terror in his legs, the burning in his lungs, the sheer disbelief that anyone could willingly subject themselves to 81 miles and 7,000 feet of elevation. He'd been driven then, by a fire lit by a single story, a single child’s face glimpsed in a news report. He'd been a novice, a raw recruit in the army of good intentions.
Each year, the ride had changed him. It wasn’t just the physical endurance, though that was a constant, demanding respect. It was the faces that lined the route, the cheers that echoed through the valleys, the shared determination in the eyes of his fellow riders. It was the knowledge that with every aching pedal stroke, he was building something more than calloused hands and strong legs. He was building hope.
He'd seen the impact firsthand. The letters from the charities, the stories of kids who had found a path, a chance, a future. He'd seen the numbers climb, the $3 million milestone a testament to the collective power of a community united by a cause.
There were years the ride had been harder. Years when life had thrown its own steep climbs and treacherous descents. Years when the temptation to stay in bed, to let someone else take the wheel, had been almost overwhelming. But the memory of those faces, the weight of those stories, had always pulled him back.
This year, as the sun warmed his back and the first incline loomed, he felt a different kind of weariness. A weariness that wasn't about aching muscles, but about the weight of time, the accumulated stories, the sheer enormity of the task. Yet, there was also a profound sense of purpose, a deep-rooted understanding that this wasn't just a ride anymore. It was a legacy.
He wasn't just riding for the kids at risk; he was riding for the boy he'd been ten years ago, the one who'd believed that a single act could make a difference. He was riding for the man he’d become, the one who knew that it could. He was riding for the countless others who had joined him on this journey, their hearts beating in unison with his.
As he began his climb, the gears grinding and the air thinning, he knew that this ride, like the others, would be a testament to the enduring power of hope, the unwavering strength of the human spirit, and the simple, profound truth that even the steepest climbs are worth it, when the view from the top is a world made a little brighter.
In
2009, Levi Leipheimer brought thousands of people together from around
the world to do one simple thing: ride bikes together. At that same
moment in time, we created the King Ridge Foundation to channel the
energy of this world-class cycling event into a great cause: kids.
To-date we've raised more than $3.6 million for at-risk youth charities, and together we have had an incredible impact for our most vulnerable population. We are committed to this cause and we are honored to have your support!
Organizations that we supported in 2024 include:
Forget Me Not Farm: https://forgetmenotfarm.org/
Outride: https://outridebike.org/
We need your support once again to help these organizations thrive in their missions to help youth across our region. With your donation we can make the impossible possible, for all the right reasons.
Donate or create your own campaign today and join us for our annual celebration of Sonoma County and the "best day on two wheels" in the world. Join us today and help make a real difference in a child's life.
