Since the fall of the Afghan government, the country has also fallen into chaos and mayhem. The repercussions have had a ripple effect on every aspect of a major humanitarian crisis - from economic depletion to scarce medical help, from limited water supply to massive displacement. Not one corner of the country has been untouched by disaster and volatility. 

There is a glimpse of hope for the Afghan people when it comes to the chance to be evacuated and to pick up the pieces of their former life. It’s not a dream to leave their homeland, but a sacrifice they are willing to make, a second lease on life. The hard working peoples of Afghanistan are prepared more than ever to bring abroad the skills and education they’ve acquired over the last 20 years of rebuilding to once again rebuild themselves, their families, and their legacies.

It was assumed that the conquering of Panjshir would bring about a civility across the nation but the power struggle remains and is anticipated to last. The increasing tensions between the Haqqani, Gulbudin, and other sects of the Taliban infer that a civil war is on the very near horizon. The mass of executions and abductions have been primarily behind the scenes to maintain a copacetic facade on the world’s stage, but with such a violent outbreak nearing, fears are heightened and panic is beginning to set in for the civilians who have endured the label of ‘casualties of war’ for the last many decades.

It is imperative that orderly, safe, and compliant exit strategies are formulated and remain in place in Afghanistan long after the world has moved on from this crisis. Simultaneously, the rebuilding of Afghan lives will be a long, enduring and very involved process that must be carefully met with compassion and understanding.
