Southern Siberian Rescue hasn't added a story.
Southern Siberian Rescue is a 501c3 rescue based out of Raleigh, NC. We are a small group of dedicated volunteers responsibly rescuing Siberian Huskies in need throughout North Carolina and surrounding states. Our sole purpose and priority is to help unwanted, misunderstood, abandoned or neglected Siberians find homes. We do this by providing needed health care, rehabilitation and training for all our foster dogs and carefully screening potential adopters.
Camp Howard is adding a Sanctuary for our Senior Siberians & Enclosure for the Jumpers!
Siberian Huskies…you know the type. Amazing beauty, striking poses, longing eyes and the ability to leap a tall building (or fence) in a single bound. We love our Siberian family members and all their, let’s say, “unique” characteristics. They rock our worlds and we would never leave them.
Sadly though, there are some folks that don’t understand the nature of the breed and cannot appreciate their unique qualities. Frequently when this happens, Siberians end up in shelters – sad, terrified and absolutely ready to go crazy from being locked up and left behind. Southern Siberian Rescue (SSR) is constantly bombarded via email, text, phone calls and social media asking us to help Siberians in need. When we can, we do. Sadly, a lot of those requests are for Senior Siberians or those that have boundary issues – fence jumpers. Through no fault of their own, they’ve found themselves sitting in a cold, concrete floored shelter with no way out because they are old or just too hard to contain. SSR has never, and will never, discriminate based upon age or lack of training. A Siberian in need is a Siberian in need. The Seniors and jumpers need us the most because they are the least likely to be adopted from a shelter and thus the most likely to be euthanized.
Many Siberians that we pull from shelters come to us scared, shy and timid and need a comfort zone to adjust to their new environment and learn trust and companionship from both humans and dogs alike. They need time, patience and a quiet environment as they can easily be intimidated by rowdy and rambunctious Siberians, making them a target to be bullied and picked on, especially outside. We want to ease the transition for them by providing a safe outside environment where they feel comfortable to express themselves and run freely without worry of being a target by the more socialized dogs in our program.
Over the years we have also pulled incredible escape artists. Hotwire
fixes most of these concerns but we have been, and are currently,
faced with several foster dogs that can and do jump a 6 foot hotwired
(top and bottom) privacy fence. The right adoptive home eventually
comes along, but it takes a special family to understand the extreme
nature of their escapism and how imperative it is that they be leash
walked only. Until that time, they deserve more time outside to freely
romp and play while being safe and secure in a fenced yard.
Because of the unending need we have at Camp Howard for these
special members of SSR, our plan is two-fold. First, we are building a
separate fenced area inside the current fenced area for our Seniors
and shy kids to call their own. Second, we are building a wood “cat
fence” on the existing fence to keep the jumpers contained and safe.
Our foster dogs are indoor/outdoor dogs and we’re making the move to
be sure that when they’re outside, they are safe and secure!
SSR desperately needs your help to make these modifications to our existing ½ acre fenced yard. Please consider contributing to our efforts to keep bringing in the Siberians that need us the most. If you love Siberian Huskies, please make a donation today. Any amount will help if we all pitch in. No dollar amount is too small as it all adds up. We have received a quote of $4,300. We are asking for your donations to make this possible for the health, welfare, wellbeing and safety of all our foster dogs regardless of their age, personality, natural instincts and past history. The link for online payments is below, or you can mail a check payable to Southern Siberian Rescue, PO Box 98601, Raleigh, NC 27624-8601. Thank you for your consideration and helping our foster dogs in need. SSR is a 501c3 non-profit organization and your donation is tax deductible. IMPORTANT: Please consider sharing with your friends so we can reach our goal.
