Common Roots Urban Farm needs some early-season support to get our second season off to a strong start.  We need: #1) farmers wages for the planning and early season; and #2) a wash station that meets Food Safety regulations. More ...

The Need:

Common Roots Urban Farm needs your help to get the season started on time.  To get growing, we need our Farmer back.  Last year she rallied hundreds of people to grow 1,650 lbs of fresh, healthy food for the Parker Street Food Bank.   We want to rehire Farmer Sara to get planning and planting, so we can start harvesting delicious fresh vegetables in early May.  That means fresh produce earlier for the Food Bank. Our grant support kicks in later in the growing season – so we need our community's help -  your help -  to help others!

We also need to build a wash station that meets food safety standards.  For washing produce (and hands) we need a little sink and counter.  This won't cost too much, and it will allow us to sell produce and generate revenues, just like a real farm!

About us:

Common Roots Urban Farm is a hybrid of park, community garden, market garden, and education centre.  Our mission is to promote healthy lifestyles and landscapes through hands-on education in growing and eating healthy food.   Our vision is a community of healthy people, connected to their food, each other, and the natural environment.

Lots of people use the farm.  There are hosts, plotters, core volunteers, interns, and staff.  People come to help out for just the afternoon, in the market garden or edible landscapes.  Groups can schedule a tour or an educational theme to get dirty to.  For a tour, come by any day between three and six pm, May through October.

To top it off, we are right next to the hospital Emergency entrance.  We hear many stories of people using the garden to process, grieve, and relax in difficult times.  Sometimes, just by watching through the windows.  This year, we're developing a Flower Farm by the windows and entrance near Emergency.  To donate a plant to that campaign, click here.

Common Roots Urban Farm is a project of Partners for Care, a charity that supports Capital Health's vision of "Healthy People, Healthy Communities."  It is an interim land use that we will likely have for the next 5 years.  Partners for Care manages numerous social enterprises including the Mindful Mango, Park'n'Bike, Partners for Healthier Weight, and the VG Farmers Market.
