*******
Founded in 1998, MusiArt began as a music therapy initiative for outpatients in the psychiatric ward of the Montreal General Hospital (HUGM). Its goal was to use group singing and creativity to promote well-being, self-esteem, social connection, and recovery.
• From its inception, the choir positioned itself as a "creative ambassador" for mental health, using performance and music to combat the stigma surrounding mental illness and showcase the abilities of people living with psychiatric disorders.
• By 2000, the choir had already gained national recognition, receiving an award from the Canadian Psychiatric Association for the most innovative activity during Mental Health Awareness Week.
• Over the years, MusiArt members were not just patients: some had musical training, but most were enthusiastic amateurs who found meaning in their lives, a routine, and a sense of belonging to a community through music. • The program was part of a broader music therapy framework at the McGill University Health Centre (MUHC), where qualified therapists like Dany Bouchard and later Julie Migner-Laurin helped guide and direct the choir as part of therapeutic interventions.
• The choir is at risk of cutting down due to a lack of both private donations at the MGH Foundation and the $1.5 billion in budget cuts to Santé Québec.
