Women are underrepresented in STEM jobs and your donation to Nvolve will help address this gap.
- Women comprise 48% of all US workers but only 25% of STEM workers.
- At least 20% of women with STEM degrees do not participate in the STEM workforce.
- Women are underrepresented among degree recipients at all degree levels in physical and earth sciences, mathematics and computer sciences, and engineering.
- The STEM attrition problem is even more severe when considering racial, ethnic, and socio-economic barriers.
Nvolve is a non-profit that was formed to increase the participation of college women in technology, engineering, life sciences and health careers by overcoming gender, racial and socioeconomic barriers.
In collaboration with academic and industry partners, Nvolve uses unique approaches to mentoring, professional skill-building and experiential learning to prepare college women for successful STEM careers. Our program engages STEM students throughout the academic year --- providing them with a window into the real-world ways of working.
We are proud to be a fully volunteer-led organization and 100% of the tax-deductible donations from this campaign will be dedicated to student stipends.
Meet Afia-Grace Harris, an Nvolve alumna.
Afia-Grace's journey demonstrates the power of passion, pursuit of
knowledge, and resilience. Join us in celebrating Afia-Grace's
experience with Nvolve.
" In July 2021, encouraged by my college advisor at the
University of Maryland, I applied to Nvolve. I recognized that I
needed consistent guidance and research experience as a student
returning to in-person learning post-COVID. I recognized that I
needed to augment my education at UMD by being exposed to research
opportunities and other learnings offered by Nvolve. I am now an
Nvolve alumna and hold my Bachelor of Science degree in Public
Health Science, fueled by a passion for health equity.

As a Nvolve scholar, I took on leadership roles, hosting speaker sessions on diverse topics such as Dr. Boyd’s experience in Big Pharma at AstraZeneca, and interview preparation by Michael Hotchkiss. I produced two women in STEM podcasts and completed three Tableau data visualization projects covering pre- / post-COVID flight patterns, COVID-19 prevalence among races, and chronic disease indicators across states. In addition, I developed a chatbot with Google Dialogflow. These projects pushed me out of my comfort zone, honing my tech skills and improving my teamwork capabilities.
Our weekly group discussions during the entire academic year provided me with valuable insights on negotiation techniques, project management best practices, behavioral interviews, and professionalism. The safe and open environment of our meetings provided me space to express my opinions freely and develop closer relationships with peers, enhancing both professional and personal skills applicable to various industries.
My mentor, Dr. Tiana Garrett, a Science editor for the CDC, guided me on personal, Nvolve, and academic matters for almost three years. Her support, patience, advice, and encouragement of advocating for myself, being courageous with new projects and experiences, and celebrating progress have been invaluable.
Nvolve significantly shaped my outlook and readiness for my post-graduation transition. To college women majoring in STEM, my advice is to embrace discomfort, seek opportunities in challenges, and celebrate every small progress and accomplishment.
