Prior to 2011, primary, secondary, and post-secondary education was offered to everyone in Syria as the majority of the population had the financial means to cover school or university fees and ancillary expenses. However, over the past 10 years, Syria has faced devastating circumstances, leaving millions of children and youth deprived of education and decent living conditions with a significant increase in illiteracy levels. Failure to ensure education for children and adolescents increases the risk of poverty and closes off future opportunities.
Provided by People believes that all age groups must have equal access to educational opportunities in order to develop and achieve their full potential. Provided by People aims to revive hope by providing a trustful platform and a bridge between people in Syria and the rest of the world.
INTRODUCTION TO 4YOUTH
Provided by People is launching a fundraising campaign to support university students in different governorates in Syria. While it is hard to collect accurate data in the country, an estimated 72% of young adults (18 - 24 years old) inside Syria were not enrolled in any form of higher education. ( UNHCR , 2017, p.9)
4YOUTH campaign will include various projects, starting with:
TISHREEN UNIVERSITY 2021
Provided by People’s first project will focus on supporting Tishreen University students whose financial situation has been impacted by the recent wildfires in Latakia Governorate by providing them with monthly support to complete their second semester (winter/spring 2021).
CRITERIA & ELIGIBILITY
After conducting a preliminary study with the students’ council of Tishreen University, we have selected the following criteria:
- Second-year students
- Students’ whose programs require regular attendance:
- Engineering
- Medicine
- Biology
- Pharmacy
- High-performing students (chosen based on their first-year results)
- In need of support or lost a breadwinner
EXECUTION
Provided by People Volunteers on the ground will assist in distributing the aid on a monthly basis, while the students' council of Tishreen University will conduct monthly follow-ups on awardees of the aid to ensure they continue meeting eligibility requirements.
OBJECTIVE
It is estimated that 6,688 students at Tishreen University are second-year students who are enrolled in the selected programs above. 1036 of those students were impacted by the recent wildfires. Our objective is to support a minimum of 100 students in this group to help them complete their academic year successfully. Their biggest barriers are the cost of transportation, books, and necessary equipment.
Our goal is to eliminate
these obstacles and ensure that the students can attend their
classes ~4-5 days a week until the end of the (winter/spring 2021) semester.
The average student spent around 2
,500 SYP (~1 USD)
per day (as of February 15th).
Based on this data and to achieve this goal, we aim to raise $10,000 USD in donations. We of course strive to exceed our goal in order to support more than 100 students.
*100 USD will support one student for 5 months.
TIMELINE
The fundraising window is from December 19, 2020, to February 20, 2021 . The plan is to start providing support on March 1st, 2021, the first day of the second semester. Any donations coming after February 29th will go towards supporting the same students for their next academic year (2021-2022) as long as they still meet the criteria.

1. Is this a one-time project?
Tishreen University 2021 project is part of the 4YOUTH campaign. 4YOUTH will include several future projects in other governorates
2. Why did we choose to focus on university students?
According to the UN, education has become an essential element of any humanitarian response and has the same level of importance as food, protection and health. In Syria, priority is given to primary and secondary education and fewer opportunities are available to support students who are pursuing higher education. ( Avery et al., 2017 )
3. Why Tishreen University?
Many households (Tishreen University students' families) were heavily affected by the recent wildfires and are in need of various forms of humanitarian assistance. According to UNOCHA, approximately 25,000 people may have been internally displaced and 140,000 people (28,000 households) were affected through: destruction, damages of homes, and 9,000 hectares of agricultural land ( UNOCHA, 2020 ). This situation has impacted students emotionally and financially which created insecurity and instability that shifted students' focus from continuing their education.
On the other hand, the population of Latakia governorate, where Tishreen University is located, is diverse, as many internally displaced students from neighbouring governorates relocated to Latakia attending Tishreen University. The governorates include: Idlib, Raqqa, Deir Al Zor, and Tartus.
4. Why did we choose the additional criteria?
While the main criteria for this project is to focus on students who were affected by the recent wildfires in Syria, we also took into consideration other important factors to help us ensure better results:
- Second-year students
Second-year university students have proven academic records from the first year, and their performance can be evaluated to determine the possibility of providing the same support until the completion of their degrees.
- Students’ whose programs require regular attendance
The listed programs require students to be present at the university and that involves a daily transportation cost and a higher cost for educational material.
- High-performing students
High-performing students are usually more motivated to continue their education and are more likely to contribute to their society and grow up to become future civic leaders.
- In need of financial support or lost a breadwinner
With the current economic situation In Syria, financials are becoming a major barrier for parents and students to be able to afford the daily cost involved with education, and in general, individuals who lose a breadwinner have no one to rely on and become the only providers for themselves and in some cases for their families as well.

6. Can I still donate after February 20th?
Yes. Donations are always welcome and appreciated. However, it is crucial to reach the goal before March 1st since the number of selected students will be determined ahead of time by the total donation we receive. Based on that number, Provided by People will proceed with the selection process and shortlist the right candidates in order to provide them with a partial scholarship to cover their expenses for the 2021 winter semester.
