The Karuna Girls College needs your help! Teachers haven't been paid in 3 months

The Karuna Girls College in Lumbini,
Nepal, opened its doors in June 2013 with a modest
enrolment of 25 students. Today, more than 320 girls attend
the school.
Each year since the school opened its doors, it has received
the majority of its annual funds from a Calgary Stampede charity
event we've grown to love called The Cowtown Rodeo. Due to
COVID-19, the charity event has been cancelled this year. To add
to this unfortunate circumstance, the pandemic has decimated the
Lumbini area, virtually immobilizing the community.
The Cowtown Rodeo and the Karuna team need your help to keep
the school going, to pay teachers and continue to help these
girls grow and develop into community leaders.
The Karuna Girls College focuses on education beyond elementary school for teenage girls and vocational training for disadvantaged women in this impoverished area. In poor traditional families, girls are not expected to continue past elementary school. They are normally married off & forced to live with and take care of the husband’s family. Parents have to pay large dowries to get their daughters married and thus girls are seen as a burden on the family. The lack of girls’ education contributes to several systemic problems: • Female repression
• Greed and corruption
• Lack of basic health
• Severe malnutrition • Family hygiene • Over-population • Ignored medical care & high infant/mother mortality rates Apart from offering English, Math, Science and other academic subjects, the school provides basic life skills such as nutrition, family planning, agriculture, and social responsibility.
