Alaskans For McGuire hasn't added a story.
Lesil McGuire has dedicated her life to Alaska and public service. She wants to keep the same energy and focus as Alaska's next Lt. Governor and ensuring Alaskans' voices are heard in Juneau, nationally and internationally.
Lesil is a proud mother and wife. She and her husband Jason Skala are raising their four boys in the community and state she grew up in and has devoted her life to. Besides fishing and experiencing Alaska's outdoors, Lesil works hard to show her boys how volunteerism is a central part of her life and how important it is to give back to their community. Lesil actively supports various community programs such as the Special Olympics, the Blood Bank of Alaska, Covenant House, the Alaska Moose Federation, the Alaska Republican Women's Club, the Young Republicans and is a Board Member of the Alaska Traumatic Brain Injury Awareness Board. After graduating from Dimond High, Lesil attended Willamette University where she obtained an undergraduate degree in Speech Communication and Political Science. Following her undergraduate studies, Senator McGuire went on to work in Washington D.C. for two years as a legislative and press aide for United States Senator Ted Stevens. She subsequently obtained her Juris Doctorate from Willamette University College of Law while clerking in the United States Attorney's Office in Oregon. Her law degree was put to use when she came back to Alaska and worked for the firm of Birch, Horton, Bittner & Cherot. Lesil began her work in the Alaska State Legislature as the counsel for the House Judiciary Committee. In this capacity she cultivated her knowledge of the legislative process as well as the civil and criminal laws of Alaska. When the seat in her district opened up, she took advantage of the opportunity to help her community in a unique way and decided to run for the Alaska State House. At age 29 she was elected by an overwhelming 64% of her district. In 2006, she was elected to the Senate, once again winning her election by a large margin, earning 66% of the votes. Having been elected as the voice of her community, Lesil takes this responsibility very seriously. She has worked diligently for nearly 12 years to make Alaska a better place for all to enjoy. Throughout her life, Lesil has always sought out opportunities. She studied abroad in Russia, Greece, China, and twice in Spain. Lesil has been able to translate the lessons and experiences she had abroad into assets for her own community. As a Senator, Lesil works hard to make all of Alaska a better place and knows that while her first responsibility is to represent her constituents, doesn't shy away from bringing her experience abroad to tackling the diverse challenges facing Alaskans. Lesil recently served in her first term on the Senate Finance Committee and continued to maintain her role on the Senate Resources and Judiciary Committees. Lesil is actively involved in national and international legislative leadership organizations as well where she fights to ensure Alaska's issues are represented. For example, during her term as the President of Pacific Northwest Economic Region (PNWER) she established an "Arctic Caucus" to bring together the Yukon, Northwest Territories and Alaska to collaborate on resource development in the Arctic. Lesil is also the past Chair of the Council of State Governments-WEST, an alumnae of CSG-West's Western Legislative Academy and the Henry Toll Fellowship with the Council of State Governments.
