I am very excited to announce that I have been working hard to
plan and implement a very small, Nova Scotia based, dog rescue. The
rescue will be called "Fetch a Dog Rescue and Transport"
(FaDRaT). This rescue will be 100% foster based and will rely on
fundraising and donations from people and businesses who have a love
of, and wish to help, dogs in need.
Due to the incredible crisis of unaltered pets and overbreeding
in the U.S., especially in particular states in the south, thousands
of dogs are euthanized in high kill shelters every week. Meanwhile,
here in the Maritimes, it is actually challenging to find many
rescue dogs to adopt, thankfully due to how far we have come with
education and laws regarding how we care for our pets. It is the
wish of FaDRaT to help with the crisis south of our border, and to
match up loving and deserving dogs in need with loving and deserving
families here in the Maritimes who want to adopt a rescue dog, but
are having trouble finding a dog to rescue locally.
The plan for the rescue to start will be to bring three dogs up
from the southern U.S. at a time, to be fostered by responsible and
loving volunteer foster homes I have already chosen here in Nova
Scotia. Then they will be adopted into approved loving families.
Funds will need to be raised before these dogs can be saved and
brought to Canada, to have their vetting and transport fees paid, as
well as for food and supplies, emergency vet care, and any possible
training necessary, once the dogs are in foster care here in N.S.
All funds raised go directly to the dog rescue. Once the three dogs
are adopted into approved homes, and there is enough in the account
for it, three more dogs can be saved and brought to Canada again. If
we can keep raising the funds, we will keep saving the dogs!
[There are also plans to help transport other rescue dogs who
have been adopted into Canada through other rescues, and need help
getting to their new furever Canadian families from the border in
St. Stephen, New Brunswick (which is as far as the dogs coming up
from the U.S. are transported), to wherever they are going along our
route to the South Shore. We would do this at the same time we were
transporting our dogs, as we will have a van rental and the space.
There is great need for transport here in the Maritimes, and we want
to help as much as we can. ]
Our initial goal for the rescue is to hopefully raise $5000 by
the spring. This would be enough money to pull three dogs from
shelter, fully vet them (incl. spaying/neutering and vaccinations),
transport them from the southern U.S. to N.S., and foster them with
all funds needed for their care (including possible emergency
situations). I already have southern U.S. rescues (reputable people
I have worked with for a while now in other aspects of dog rescue)
partnering with me to pull loving and deserving dogs out of the
shelters and have them vetted and transported up to the border, as
well as other helpful rescue contacts, and trusted friends willing
to volunteer in various capacities, including fostering the dogs.
All I need now are the funds to make sure these dogs can get here to
N.S., and then get the best care they need and deserve until they go
on to the new permanent loving homes they deserve.
Would you like to help us help these dogs in terrible need south
of the border? Let's save some furry four-footed lives together!
