Fullness Circles Foundation hasn't added a story.
I work with wounded and returning veterans to help them become agents of their own healing.
I'm humanist thinker and illustrator Jeff Stilwell. I came up with the idea for Healing Circles after hearing about the growing number of suicides in the military and among veterans. I wanted to do something to help.
Using Healing Circles, the veterans gather in small groups helping each other figure out what healing means to them. They assign themselves healing homework each week, and they assign each other healing homework. I even start off the whole discussion with one of my Thrashin' Jack comics to help the veterans focus while keeping things light.
Over time, the veterans develop deeper relationships with each other, a crucial component to their healing. Few veterans have those special people in their lives willing to listen about the horrific violence their minds and bodies have experienced.
Then, too, accomplishing the weekly healing homework – even if the tasks are small – rebuilds their confidence to the point they are able to make those larger changes they want: a better job, a better place to live, getting off medication, stronger relationships with others.
I am currently working with veterans at Mark Cooper Transitional Housing in Seattle, Shoreline Veteran Center in Shoreline, Washington, and Supportive Services for Veterans in Lake City (Seattle). I collaborate with the Fullness Circles Foundation who is helping with this fund-raising campaign so we can keep Healing Circles available at no cost to the veterans.
We aim to establish twenty Healing Circles in the greater Seattle area. I will train additional Healing Circle moderators as the need arises.
The amount we are raising pays for training of and a stipend to moderators of Healing Circles. It pays a royalty to me for my illustrations, making the comics freely available to the veterans so they may post them anywhere they find helpful. It pays for moderators to travel across town. It also pays for the rental of the rooms where the Healing Circle meets.
Will you help us keep this project free for the veterans?
