I am Robert Nelson; I am from the area and for the area. Here is a brief background of my qualifications and why I feel that I am capable to represent you in the House of Representative in Juneau. My Parents are Louie and the late June Nelson. I was born and raised in Kotzebue. I graduated from Kotzebue High School, then went on to the University of Oregon where acquired my bachelor’s degree in political science with a minor in economics. After College I wanted to put my degree to work on behalf of the region and our people. I served for six years as a legislative aide to the following: the late Rep. Eileen MacLean, a longtime co-chair of the powerful House Finance Committee; Sen. Al Adams, who held many leadership positions; as well as Rep. Don Long. While I was in Juneau, I feel that I sharpened my knowledge of public policy and how to effectively put together legislation and build consensus. All the while getting to see the vast needs of our district. I worked with the region’s constituents, drafted bills, and tracked budget items that had an impact on Northern Alaska and the State.Following my service in Juneau I was hired by Teck at the Red Dog Mine. I worked for 10 years in the Human Resources department, managing the company’s training and development programs, which included outreach to residents of the region. I worked in Red Dog’s school-to-work program and also held a part in the college and technical training scholarships that were awarded. As part of this position, I was pleased to participate in the John Baker school visits, and to see firsthand the positive impact of the messages my cousin John was providing to Alaska’s youth.During this time, I provided shareholder hire information and training updates during visits to villages in the region, and also represented Teck Red Dog Mine in outreach visits to the Alaska Legislature during the session. From my job at Red Dog I transitioned into my lifelong dream of running the Iditarod. While living at Home here in the Northwest Arctic Borough I have been training for and running the Iditarod Sled Dog Race and the Kobuk 440. I have completed five Iditarod races, finishing (in order from my first race) - 41st, 31st, 28th, 32nd and 19th. Simultaneously, I have worked seasonally in the construction industry for Drake Construction in the Nana Region. From first hand experience, I understand the importance of state and federal construction projects are essential to ensure employment opportunities for all of us that live in the rural areas. I feel that I bring experience and a high standard for achievement to the race for House Seat 40. I appreciate all of your support and humbly ask for your Vote on August 28th,Thank You Robert
