hua foundation hasn't added a story.
Established in 1943, Chau Luen Society has provided low income housing for residents in Chinatown for over 78 years; first at Main and Union Streets in Hogan’s Alley, and since 1972, owned and operating the 82-unit senior’s housing Chau Luen Tower at 325 Keefer Street.
During the current COVID-19 pandemic, the seniors living at Chau Luen have been severely impacted. They are not allowed visits from friends and family, and are at higher risk for infection. We have been taking extra precautions to ensure the safety of Chau Luen’s seniors, including disinfecting common areas and high contact areas multiple times daily and connecting seniors with culturally appropriate hot meals to reduce the risk of exposure while out grocery shopping. To date, with funding from BC Housing, we have provided over 25,000 meals since April 2020, and are asking for your support to keep this, and other critical programming running.
The $2,800 raised through this fundraiser will directly support our 100+ seniors through:
- Purchasing personal protective equipment, disinfectant and other safety equipment for the seniors
- Supplementing our current culturally appropriate meal program
- Supporting access to COVID safe social programs
- Other programs provided by Chau Luen for Chinese seniors living in Chinatown
As an organization, the Chau Luen Society is committed to the health and well-being of our community members of all ages. Our team has taken on all new responsibilities during the COVID-19 pandemic, and with your help, our hope is to maintain uninterrupted access to these services to keep our community safe.
If you have the means, please consider making a donation to keep our programming going. And don’t forget to share this fundraiser with your family and friends!
This fundraiser is hosted by hua foundation with all contributions going towards the Chau Luen Kon Sol Society.
About Chau Luen
Today, Chau Luen Tower is not only home to over 100 low income seniors residents, but is the beating heart of a strong community where Chau Luen provides a culturally appropriate and linguistically accessible environment in which to live.
Chau Luen participates and organizes many social and cultural events such as the annual Lunar New Year Parade, Lion Dance blessing ceremonies in the community, Ching Ming Graveside visits, celebratory society banquets, and an annual summer picnic and Christmas party. Residents are encouraged to participate in all events, all of which are subsidized for the tenants.
Chau Luen has two social clubs. The Athletic Club is open to all ages and organizes a variety of programs to encourage and promote physical and mental health. Participants can attend classes to learn traditional Chinese kung fu and lion dancing, ping pong, singing, and line dancing. They meet weekly and participate in the Lunar New Year Parade, performing lion dancing, singing and dancing in community events and association banquets. The Seniors Group is open to seniors. The Seniors Group holds social events like karaoke sessions and hosts birthday banquets two times a year.
The Society also partners with various community groups and organizations to provide services and programming to Chau Luen Tower residents and the broader community. For example, we have partnered with the Vancouver Chinese Benevolent Association in organizing a Chinatown Clean Day - where participants would assist in cleaning up the neighborhood. We have also partnered with the award winning, Yarrow Intergenerational Society, to organize language accessible social and leisure events hosted in the Chau Luen Tower amenity space for residents.
