In October of this year, our Board of Directors recognized a critical and urgent need for increased fundraising efforts in order to continue supporting the therapeutic services and academic programming our students so desperately need. They promptly appointed Jennifer O’Malley as our new Executive Director and began planning local fundraising events. However, as a non-profit we truly rely on generous donations to keep our doors open to the deserving children we serve.

For 20 years, Lafayette School has served students with severe emotional disorders, learning disorders, intellectual disability, and autism from surrounding localities in central Virginia. Many of the students in our care have experienced complex and profound emotional trauma, and as a result they struggle to appropriately navigate the traditional school setting. Lafayette School is uniquely qualified to help these students feel supported, understood, and cared for in that it is the most therapeutic day school in Virginia. While academics are indeed a priority, our program emphasizes weekly art, group, family, canine, equine, and individual therapies. Our students also practice yoga and participate in a seasonal music program. We use a trauma-informed care model and specifically designed instruction to teach children how to trust themselves and others, identify and safely express their feelings, and receive forgiveness.

Lafayette School has been a safe place to heal for countless children and families. At Lafayette we believe neurodiversity is a strength and we aid our students in achieving their goals. We encourage those of our students who wish to return to public school, and most of them do so successfully within 12-24 months. Furthermore, during the 2018-19 school year, 100% of our seniors graduated on time. Whether they return to public school or Lafayette becomes their safe haven through graduation, our students go on to attend college or trade school, have careers, and develop healthy relationships. We know this because we often receive happy phone calls or letters from former students and their parents!

You don't have to know how to care for a child suffering from mental illness to make a positive impact on their life, you just have to support those who do with your donation.

UPDATE 12/11/19: With the help of over 70 generous supporters, we made significant progress toward our fundraising goals in November! However, we still need your help to pay teacher salaries, buy school supplies and behavioral incentives for the students, and cover transportation costs.  You can be part of the success story of a child in our community if you contribute now!
