RADSTORM FOREVER <3 Help Halifax Community Art & Music Space Buy Our Building!
(Let’s Buy The Radstorm Building Together!)
There is a special sort of magic that exists in volunteer-run community spaces. For the past 15 years, Radstorm has been a critical resource for, and epicenter of, Halifax's DIY (do-it-yourself) music, arts, and activist communities with a focus on queer and youth-centred creative programs, artist residencies, all-ages music shows, and other community-building initiatives. It has done this with an all-volunteer steering committee, and the financial support (on a sliding scale) of the people who use the space.
Over the years, we have had to move our location several times, but despite these hurdles have expanded to serve growing and overlapping communities.
We have an amazing opportunity to purchase our current building on Gottingen Street so that Radstorm and all of its projects can have a permanent home! As Halifax’s North End gentrifies, finding affordable and accessible space for not-for-profit community groups is dwindling. With the stability of owning our own building we will never be forced to relocate again, and can focus our time and energy on providing community resources!
We are reaching out to the public to help us achieve this goal! We need to fundraise $50,000 which will go towards the down payment cost of the building. We are also seeking grants, a mortgage, and individual “community investors” to help us reach our total goal to purchase the building for $450,000.
OUR HISTORY:
Radstorm, in various forms and locations, has existed for over 15 years. It all started with the Anchor Archive Zine Library on Roberts Street in 2003 and joined by Ink Storm Screenprinting Collective in 2007. In 2013, both organizations had to move and occupied various short-term locations until teaming up with SadRad Music Collective in 2014 in a commercial office space on Almon Street, thus forming “RadStorm.” In 2018, Radstorm was displaced from this location, along with many other arts and community organizations, as the building was demolished to build condos. In October 2018, Radstorm moved to 2177 Gottingen Street, and has tripled in size, been joined by other groups, and offers many more events and resources than ever before!
ABOUT US:
Radstorm is a not-for-profit community arts and music space, located in the North End of Halifax, Nova Scotia. We provide space and resources for anyone who wants to explore creativity, especially those who don’t feel they have access to equipment, spaces, and resources due to limited income, racism, transphobia, homophobia, sexism, ageism, and other factors. Something special about Radstorm is that we are an all-ages venue and everything is Pay-What-You-Can!
Radstorm is home to many different projects and resources, including:
*The Anchor Archive Zine Library with over 7000 zines (independently published art and writing) and zine making supplies!
*Ink Storm Screenprinting Collective, a full studio for screenprinting t-shirts, posters, and art, including workshops for the public!
*SadRad All-Ages Music Collective, an all-ages venue for shows and rehearsal space!
*The People’s Photocopier, affordable photocopies!
*The People’s Fridge, free food and meal servings with Food Against Fascism!
*The People’s Kiln for ceramics and pottery, including workshops!
*Multi-purpose event and meeting space, available to anyone in the community to book!
*An artist-in-residency program, bringing artists from all over the world and the local community together make and share their work!
If you could please donate to help us buy our building that would mean the world to us. We want to continue to provide to our community and to help people pursue their artistic dreams and ambitions for years to come. RADSTORM FOREVER <3
Radstorm is located at 2177 Gottingen Street in Kjipuktuk on unceded Mi’kmaq territory.
Radstorm recognizes that we are occupying unceded Mi’kmaq territory, and purchasing stolen land adds another layer of accountability that Radstorm needs to have to the people who are the traditional stewards of the land. Radstorm also recognizes that Gottingen Street is going through a large transformation of gentrification and we strive to be accessible and relevant to the communities who are the historical residents of the North End, particularly poor and racialized communities, who are most negatively impacted by gentrification. Purchasing a building means recognizing the great privilege we will have as property owners and stepping up our game to be accountable to all of those who support us and to all of those who access the shared space and resources.
