Soul Source Foundation Programs 2016!!

Women’s Empowerment Training works to provide training for Women’s groups in Western Kenya around Lake Victoria. Their trainings focus on the seven areas of life: relationships, sexuality, money, work, body, emotions, and spirituality. Already nine groups are scheduled for initial training follow up training! Groups trained in the past have ventured out in various income generating activities to support themselves and their families.

As a result of table banking collaborative and support from the Soul Source Foundation women’s groups are: Farming, making porridge for nursery school students, hiring out generator and motorbike, buying tents and chairs for lease, community health work, selling vegetables, and dividing interest earned and monies saved to pay school fees and other expenses. Not to mention the selling of grains, fish, vegetables, secondhand clothing, making and selling of handbags, necklaces, bangles, and liquid soap.

Operation My People secondary scholarship program, began in 2010 at Kamasengre Mixed Secondary School on Rusinga Island to help ensure the opportunity for a quality education for young girls and now supports 40 students a year. Several students have gone onto to pursue post-secondary education as a result of having access to an uninterrupted high school education. Already forty-three students have completed four years of secondary school through OMP program. The importance of educating young women is explained in this Unicef article:

“Providing girls with an education helps break the cycle of poverty: educated women are less likely to marry early and against their will; less likely to die in childbirth; more likely to have healthy babies; and are more likely to send their children to school. When all children have access to a quality education rooted in human rights and gender equality, it creates a ripple effect of opportunity that influences generations to come.”

Post secondary educational support enable partnerships with two young women who are following their dreams of earning a Bachelors degree in Nursing and English Literature. We are actively pursuing partnerships for scholarships of other interested students by connecting them with other opportunities for academic support.

The reproductive health education program is a vital part of a child’s education on Rusinga Island that provides a health class and AIDS awareness, counseling and empowerment through peer educators in the primary and secondary schools. This program reaches over 1,000 students each year.

Nursery schools provide the foundation for students from two to eight years old. To help ensure a quality education, Soul Source sponsors teachers for the certification in Early Childhood Education and funds breakfast porridge for all enrolled students in partnership with the Gunda Peterson Women’s Group.

The girls clubs have been around in the communities around Lake Victoria for many years, and seek support to ensure they have underpants and sanitary pads to help them stay in school. The empowerment team provides training and encouragement for these active groups!
