As a wife, mother and stepmother to five boys and a loving grandmother to four, Veronica was devastated to hear the words “You have cancer.” On October 25th, 2013 she was diagnosed with endometrial cancer and was scheduled for robotic surgery right away.

The problem with cancer is that it doesn’t affect just one person, it affects an entire community. Her friends took it the hardest but vowed to support her in her cancer journey.

What is robotic surgery? This minimally invasive procedure allows surgeons to operate through just a few small incisions and uses a tiny wristed instrument that allows for greater rotation and bending the human wrist. There is also magnified 3D high-definition system. This means that Dr. Bernardini and his gynecological team were able to operate with enhanced vision, accuracy, dexterity and control.

Receiving robotic surgery meant that Veronica had a shorter hospital stay, less transfusion and blood loss, less pain medication and most importantly: more complete removal of the cancer cells. Because of its success, robotic surgery is also being explored for prostate cancer, head and neck cancers and thoracic surgery.

Today Veronica is cancer-free. There was a collective sigh of relief and then joy amongst her community. And on top of that, she was back to work in a month! After surgery in November, she was thrilled to celebrate the holidays with her family.

With 2 out of 5 Canadians being diagnosed with cancer, Veronica is not alone. That’s why she wants others like her to be able to receive the same ground-breaking treatment. Your gift today can make it a reality.

For every $2500 raised, one person will receive hope through this life-changing surgery.

Your donation will also be driving innovation. Research and studies are needed for this innovative procedure. The study is currently in the data gathering phase, and more work is needed to ensure that this becomes a standard of care across Canada and around the world.

Your donation will make a difference immediately for 6 patients, but have lasting effects on cancer care.

As one of the top 5 cancer research centres in the world, The Princess Margaret is best positioned to ensure that everyone receives this standard of care. Dr. Bernardini and his gynecological team are recognized national leaders and are the only ones conducting this trial in Canada.

Thank you for your gift this World Cancer Day! Believe It – We Will Conquer Cancer In Our Lifetime.

*Thanks to generous donors, your gift will be doubled! Every gift will be matched up to a total of $10,000! Please note that the matched gift will not be displayed on this website immediately but will be reflected. We will be receipting for donations $15 and above. Please note that you will receive your tax receipt by email after the completion of the campaign. If you have any questions please email us at community@thepmcf.ca. Thank you!
