Rumbler came to Hen Harbor sanctuary in early Nov. 2015, just a few weeks before he was slated to be slaughtered. Since his arrival, he has charmed visitors with his gentle warmth and his trademark Rumbler strut.

He lived happily among his other bird friends at the sanctuary until winter 2017, when he was struck down by an illness that left him unable to strut, much less stand or walk. Extensive diagnostics -- bloodwork, Xrays and ultrasounds -- have yielded no definitive results, but veterinarians believe he has either cancer (unusual in such a young bird) or a virus.

With round-the-clock suppportive care, Rumbler's condition is on the upswing. He now eats on his own (duck food and sunflower seeds are his favorites!) and spends a lot of time standing on his own, a sure sign that he is feeling better.

Key to his recovery has been the emotional support of his best friend -- Burt the rooster, who has stood at his side ever since Rumbler went down. He travels with him to vet appointments and showers him with love and concern from dawn to dusk.

Although Rumber is improving, he is by no means out of the woods, and his vet bills continue to mount. No one will be more heartbroken by his passing than his best buddy Burt.
