The Daniel Spargo-Mabbs Foundation hasn't added a story.
I'm running the British 10k on 13th July to raise money for the Daniel Spargo-Mabbs Foundation, so he can still change the lives of other young people through his story:
Dan was the younger son of Fiona and Tim Spargo-Mabbs. They, along, with Dan's older brother, Jacob, live in Croydon. He was in the lower sixth form of Archbishop Tenison CE High School in Croydon, where he'd attended since Year 7. The family are regular members of their church. Dan had a daily paper round, but on top of his round, he used to run free errands for the elderly people to whom he delivered papers. He also helped out church members with gardening and other odd jobs.
On the evening of Friday 17th January 2014, Dan persuaded his mum to let him go to a party, with a group of friends. As Dan was usually responsible, Fiona agreed that he could go. Dan and his friends went to an illegal rave instead of the party. It was the first time he'd been to a rave. At the rave, for the first time, Dan took MDMA; just half a gramme. He had no way of knowing that he would react badly to it.
Dan's body temperature soared to 42 degrees centigrade and above. At this temperature, the body's organs can't cope and they shut down. Dan fell unconscious. His friends couldn't find him but an anonymous person called for an ambulance. Dan was rushed to A&E at 0500 on 18th January.
At 0530, the police knocked on Fiona and Tim's front door and gave them the shocking news that Dan was unconscious in hospital and fighting for his life. Because his legs were swelling, he needed an operation to cut them open to relieve the pressure. He was on life support, his body unable to cope with the effects of the drug. During 18th January, Dan was transferred to King's College Hospital Liver Unit; one of the most specialised units in the country. There, machines did the work of his heart, lungs, liver, kidneys and circulatory system. The staff did everything they could to save Dan's life, but at 1250 on Monday 20th January, Dan died, surrounded by his family.
Dan's death is a tragedy that needn't have happened: he was a really well-liked, bright, talented, funny and charming young man, on the verge of adulthood. Now, Fiona, Tim & Jacob want to do all that they can to prevent this happening to any other family.
The Daniel Spargo-Mabbs Foundation has been set up to begin to educate young people through other young people. We want to reach out to young people of Dan's age. We don't want to lecture them on the general dangers of drugs; they get a fair bit of information on that. We want to involve them in discussing the issues, to get them thinking about the effects that taking drugs, even experimenting just once, can have on their family and friends. We think change in young people needs to be driven by young people!
