Did you know that the 'Heart' of Mount Pleasant was ranked # 1 on Heritage Vancouver Society’s 2019 Top Ten Endangered Watch List. This unique commercial/cultural district defined by the intersections of Main, Broadway, and Kingsway has been the hub of the neighbourhood for over 130 years, providing smaller commercial spaces allowing for a socially diverse mix of locally owned businesses, studio & cultural spaces, performance venues, and affordable rental housing in original old Mount Pleasant Village buildings.
Save the 'Heritage Heart' of Mount Pleasant
The City of Vancouver and the community, through the investment of taxpayer dollars and hundreds of thousands of volunteer hours, co-created the 2010 Mount Pleasant Community Plan (MPCP) and 2013 Implementation Package (IP), which recognize this vibrant shopping, cultural, and gathering spot as the ‘heart’ of the community, treasured not only locally, but citywide. This small portion of Mount Pleasant came to be affectionately referred to as the 'Heritage Heart'.
The ‘Heritage Heart’ is so much more than old buildings and stories of the past. It is very much alive and a part of the social and cultural fabric of people currently living in, working in, and visiting the area.
We Need Your Help
Mount Pleasant Heritage Group (MPHG) is a collection of Mount Pleasant residents, small business owners, local historians, artists, and other interested people working to identify, preserve and celebrate the built, natural, cultural & industrial heritage of Mount Pleasant in Vancouver.
We are a non-funded group and are fundraising to cover administrative costs of this campaign. We are working towards our goal of having the City formalize its recognition of the ‘heritage heart’ as documented in the 2010 Community Plan and subsequent 2013 Implementation Package. This includes the creation of a management plan that deals holistically with the social diversity, independent businesses, affordable rents, historic architecture, public spaces, and unique personality of Mount Pleasant.
Our fundraising has 2 tiers. Tier 1 ($5,000.00) includes the
costs associated with launching this campaign and working with
the cultural and heritage community to compile ideas including
approaches from other cities to explore what a management plan
could look like for the heart of Mount Pleasant. Such a plan would
focus holistically on ways to sustain and grow the diverse
cultural, commercial and social aspects that are valued about
Mount Pleasant. Tier 2 is to fund our long-term commitment
conserving the 'Heritage Heart'
Our vision? When transit users emerge from the future Main Street Broadway Subway station, they will arrive at Mount Pleasant’s vibrant and distinct ‘Heritage Heart’, not a generic “could-be-anywhere” intersection.
Finally, help us further by signing the petition to mayor and council.
The clock is ticking; the time to act is now! Let’s ensure Mount Pleasant’s vibrant and storied ‘Heart’ continues to beat strong and healthy for Vancouver’s current and future generations.
