Civilian Exposure hasn't added a story.
I’m Gavin P. Smith and I have been working on an issue of both personal and national importance for the past two years. In 2013, I learned that my father, who passed away of acute leukemia in 2008, had been exposed to decades of toxic water and soil contamination aboard Camp Lejeune while working as a civilian employee.
According to established science from the CDC's Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry, up to 1 million people were exposed to several known carcinogens in the drinking water supply from 1953 to 1987. These toxic carcinogens have been linked to ongoing health disorders, cancers and deaths.

In 2013, I took action and launched Civilian Exposure to build awareness, accountability and assistance for those exposed. Yet, the problem is much bigger than Camp Lejeune. Over 150 sites are currently listed on the EPA Superfund site list for contamination issues. Across the country, military and civilian adults and children exposed to a variety of chemicals and pollutants continue to suffer. Unfortunately, many families have experienced enormous loss. Others are slowly awakening to the problem decades later only to find no recourse available.
My father believed in the importance of education. My own recent journey back to college was transformative in nature, as it turned my negative loss into an empowering experience. I want to help others experience the same transformative journey.
In honor of my father, Civilian Exposure is launching its first College Scholarship Fund. Your contribution will help Civilian Exposure provide critical scholarship assistance to children of those exposed. As a result, they can seek to recover from a tragic life event by pursuing an education and making a better future for themselves and their families.
Our goal of $23,500 will provide 10 scholarships for the first year of the program. This includes:
1. A designated $3,500 scholarship award to attend the Thunderbird School of Global Management's masters degree program in Glendale, Arizona.
2. A designated $3,500 scholarship award to attend William & Mary Mason School of Business in Williamsburg, Virginia.
3. A designated $3,500 scholarship award to attend undergraduate programs at Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.
4. Seven (7) additional $1500 scholarships to students attending the college of their choice.
Personally, I would love to greatly surpass this giving goal and will happily increase the number of available scholarships as a result. Let's shoot to surpass the goal! Imagine the lives we could impact with $50,000, $75,000, $100,000 or more!
We would love for you to share this campaign with your family, friends and colleagues to boost our fundraising efforts.
Let's blow the doors off of this goal and make a tangible difference
for this community! On behalf of all those who will benefit from your
support, thank you so much.
