We are ready for the challenge to open the new Momence Theater & Community Arts Center. We can’t do it alone. Only through your support can we reach our goal and become a destination place for the community to enjoy once again, a place that will add to the community’s sense of pride.

A bold new design concept is sparking fresh interest and enthusiasm for rehabilitation of the 1924 Momence Theater in Historic Downtown Momence, IL. The Dixie Highway venue, is envisioned as a true community arts center, accommodating uses as diverse as concerts, live theater, classic movies, musicals and recitals to speaking engagements, business meetings and wedding receptions.

 “We’ve heard it from every planning and community development professional: The restoration of the Momence Theater has the potential to be an absolute keystone in the larger effort to enhance the image and vitality of Momence's Historic Downtown District,” explains Momence Theatre Friends President, John Sokol; a local businessman.  “It’s a project that can create a real destination as well as generate catalytic economic impacts in surrounding businesses and buildings.”

  In a departure from previous efforts to undertake a historic restoration of the theater, which is largely stripped of original design elements, the new concept calls for a modified “black box” design with either theater or dinner-style seating. Black box theaters are relatively unadorned spaces that allow performers and users greater flexibility in modifying the surroundings to suit their individual needs. The new marquee will feature classic theater style lettering, along with a modern full color digital LED display.

 The preliminary plan is to preserve the architectural elements that are still intact, the glazed Tiffany brick, scrollwork, balconies, stage, etc., while creating a modern, urban space that will be absolutely distinct in Kankakee County’s entertainment and hospitality marketplace.

 Theater renovations are projected to take from three to six months. Spearheading the venue’s renovation and operations is the 501 (c)(3) not-for-profit Momence Theatre Friends!
