Send Inner City Kids to Camp in Stanley Park
The ears of many Vancouver inner city children are filled with the sounds of sirens and traffic, their noses with exhaust, and their eyes rest only on hard surfaces like concrete and chain link. While they can admire the view of the lush North Shore Mountains from the Downtown Eastside, they have very little direct access to the nature that Vancouver is so famous for.
At Stanley Park Ecology Society (SPES), a non-profit charity, we are committed to improving the health and well-being of inner city children by giving them an opportunity to directly experience the magic and mystery of their local nature in beautiful Stanley Park.
Building on a tried-and-tested educational program, we will give more inner city students from low-income families a chance to camp overnight in a tent in Stanley Park as part of an official program and really let them experience the rainforest and all of its wild creatures. For many, the costs of nutritious food, warm clothing and other basics is often beyond reach and there is nothing left over for luxuries like educational and recreational experiences. Please help us raise $10,000 to cover the cost of camping equipment, wholesome food and educational staff for up to 250 children.
Urban Camping Nature Immersion is designed to immerse city students in the natural world, and this is an opportunity for them to take a break from a hectic urban environment and restore. For two days, the students explore forest, wetland and intertidal ecosystems, awakening their senses to nature with our skilled environmental educators. Their noses are filled with the freshness of the forest and the salt of the sea. When they flip over a rock, they see dozens of shore crabs scurrying about and they learn how everything in nature is interconnected. On a night hike they meet owls, bats and often the resident beaver. They cook delicious, nutritious food over camp stoves and wake in their tents to the sounds of the birds’ melodic dawn chorus and surrounded by towering cedars and firs.
