DARJUNE LAUNCHES EXPEDITION RECOVERY FOR ADDICTION
My name is Mandy Suthers and I am the CEO/Founder of DarJune Recovery Community Center & Services. I will be leaving my home in Green Bay, Wisconsin on February 27th, 2017 to attempt a thru-hike on the Appalachian Trail. The purpose of me doing this hike is to raise funds for DarJune so we can obtain housing for individuals seeking recovery from substance abuse issues within Brown County and throughout all of Wisconsin.
HOW DARJUNE CAME TO BE
Being a person in long-term recovery with 5 1/2 years sober myself, I know just how difficult it can be trying to make it through just a single day. Every day feels like a mountain you have to climb and you feel like you won't ever make it over the next hill. I soon realized that I wanted to help other people get over those mountains and help them see the light at the end of a dark tunnel they thought they could never come out of. So, in August of 2014, DarJune Recovery Community Center & Services was founded and we opened our doors to everyone who needed help with any and all addictions and mental health challenges.
Click link below for opening day:
What was meant to be a safe place to gather has now turned into so much more. We opened DarJune on a wing and a prayer out of my old bar I had owned for 12 years. I received a 5th DUI July of 2011 and that was when I decided that I was sick and tired of being sick and tired. Sobriety was the only answer for me; it was either that or death.
DarJune was named after my mother and grandmother as a legacy for them to leave for saving my life. Today, 2 1/2 years later, we are the leading state network for Recovery Coaching. We are a source for Recovery Coach Training utilizing the CCAR model (Recovery Coach Training) and QPR (Suicide Prevention Training) throughout the Midwest.
DARJUNE'S MISSION
DarJune’s Mission is to build a bridge between addiction services by utilizing a recovery centered philosophy and providing a safe place to live and gather.
We are here to empower those in recovery and educate the community by providing a safe place to gather. Through our Circles of Recovery approach we offer several programs and events such as: live bands, open mic, addiction prevention & awareness programs, nutritional programs, stress management, and educational programs. We provide a space for several recovery and family support groups and meetings. DarJune is leading the creation of a recovery culture in Green Bay and throughout WI.

WHY THE APPALACHIAN TRAIL?
In the last 3 years, I have witnessed so many amazing miracles and success stories. So now we would love to branch out and open up programing services to support a 60 bed sober living community that can not only stay open 24/7, but that can also help individuals with substance abuse issues get help within 24 hours no questions asked in a safe environment utilizing the no wrong door policy. It can be extremely difficult for someone to get sober when there are missing pieces to treatment programs.
We are hoping to build that bridge and offer hope to all individuals who suffer from substance abuse problems who can't afford the high-cost treatment centers or don't have the proper insurance to aid in covering the costs of treatment. It happens all too often that someone is released from jail or a prison setting with many clean months under their belt only for them to relapse. This happens because there is a lack of safe places for them to go when they are struggling to find a safe solution. DarJune can be that bridge and provide all aspects necessary to help others learn how to keep making the next right choice.
I am hiking this trail alone to show just how important it is to raise enough funding to obtain housing. The Appalachian Trail in it fullest extent is like climbing Mount Everest 16 times up and down and is 2,190.3 miles long this year.
When someone is newly getting sober, this is what it feels like from day one when they start walking. A lot of the time, they don't walk into the arms of recovery right away because they struggled to find their way in the past. So, the Appalachian Trail is a lot like getting sober. I will be doing this walk and putting myself back to what it felt like mentally at day #1 of my sobriety to create awareness and education for everyone out there so others can understand what its like when you get sober. The whole time while I am attempting to walk from Georgia to Maine, I will be going through mental challenges, I will go through times when I want to go home, times when I want to give up, times when I do not want to do this trail any longer and I want to just quit because it would be easier. I will have times of seeing amazing beauty and walking in clouds only to come back down again another rocky hard path. The whole point I believe is to go through those ups and downs to yet climb to another beautiful place in the clouds (just like recovery). Every bit of this trail is exactly like the first 6 months of getting sober and learning to obtain sobriety.
I am hoping that throughout this expedition and all the youtube videos, that we will be able to create global awareness of how extremely important it is to fund housing for addiction. Safe housing creates a sense of community and family instead of not having a place to go and feeling like you are all alone and no one understands.

Currently DarJune is open daily from 10:00am - 10:00pm, but unfortunately, this is not enough. When our doors close at 10:00pm, it forces everyone who needs help out on the streets because of the lack of safe places to go. This causes confusion, a sense of loneliness, feeling completely lost, and worst of all scared. Addicts then don't know how to get through the night and the disease of addiction takes over in their minds; they turn to what is normal and comfortable, so they use again because that is comfort to them. We, meaning a community of individuals who understand and have been down their path, need to be what is comfortable for them until they can learn to love themselves again, not using. For those affected by the disease of addiction, we need to be their guiding light and not just help them obtain sobriety, but also teach them how to be in a community centered environment and obtain strong life skills.
