We are the Cowichan Valley Independent Living Resource Center located in Duncan BC. Being an organization run by the disabled for the disabled we have provided a variety of services over our 25 year history. Helping the disabled maintain their individuality through advocacy, training, equipment, arts & crafts and recreation. We provide adaptive sailing in 3 boats acquired using funds from corporate sponsorship. We have 2 trailriders used for taking the mobility challenged off-road, to places they could only dream of. Our picnics bring the cross disability groups together for fellowship and inclusion.
Today we are looking for funds to run an expanded sailing program for three full months with 2 instructors and a compliment of three sailors to the Mobility Cup disabled sailing regatta, being held in Victoria this year.
The funding stream for the society is closely regulated so we can't rob Peter's advocacy funds to pay for Paul to go sailing. Government funding through Canada Summer Jobs has been cut drastically and if we do get it we need another $18000 to cover our share of wages. Without CSJ funds we will use the funds for a shorter program using only one instructor. Our boats are old and in need of repair and maintenance.
