The Backstory Behind Arogya Paws!
A lot has changed for me in the last year. Following an
unexpected move, my dog became sick and was unable to keep food
down. After multiple trips to the vet, x-rays and a
recommendation to a very expensive specialist who was going to
look for physical abnormalities, I wondered about home remedies or
herbal treatments. The visit with the specialist had been
scheduled for multiple weeks out and I wondered if she would make
it that long without a significant deterioration in her health. I
began looking for a plant based supplement that might help her, as
I was sure her illness was more related to the anxiety of an
abrupt change in both her home environment and a reaction to the
stress that I was experiencing. I quickly found that there
weren't a lot options for pets. My husband recommended that I try
an herbal remedy often used by humans......and she got better!

A "Coincidental" Conversation
A few weeks later I had a conversation with a friend from Cape Town, South Africa. Serendipitously, he shared a story about his own dog, Kali. His mother had a health condition and started taking an herbal remedy created by a masterful herbologist in South Africa. She had gotten better with this tincture and had started giving it to Kali, who then also showed improvement in her mobility. I was intrigued!
A few weeks later I had a conversation with a friend from Cape Town, South Africa. Serendipitously, he shared a story about his own dog, Kali. She had gotten better with this tincture and had started giving it to Kali, who then also showed improvement in her mobility. I was intrigued!

Identifying a Need
Given our own belief in the value of a plant based diet and my recent search for herbal remedies for pets, I dug deeper into what was actually available for animals here in the United States. I personally take herbal supplements to support my own health, as opposed to only relying solely on Western medicine, and wondered what was available for my own dog. To my shock, not only are there very few options in terms of tinctures for pets, there are are crazy ingredients in many of the products, some include such things as Borax (not joking - check the labels).

Gratitude for My Pet and Those I Have Met Through Her
My dog has been my constant friend, both during COVID and
then during a tumultuous life transition. Her name is Savi
and she is a Golden Doodle who is way more Poodle than Golden
Retriever. During a very isolated time in a new community,
she introduced me to the parents of her new friends here in
Mount Vernon. Friends like Wrigley, a Golden Retriever who she
will hunt down at our local park, and Ari, a Pitbull -
Staffordshire mix whose mom kept us company all winter in the
rain and dark when no one else was around. The value of
having a fur companion has been priceless. I want Savi to
have a long and healthy life, and her friends as well. If it
takes starting my own supplement company to make sure she has
access to quality and affordable health support, then I am in!

Taking on a New Adventure!
After several conversations, and using the knowledge and
resources from an established family that had been creating
herbal supplements for decades, Gareth decided to add a pet
line to his own blossoming supplement business he was growing
in the UK and in Europe. (If you are in South Africa or
the UK, you can find several products at Arogya Paws in South
Africa). I initially thought I would import the
supplements and simply sell them here in the states. After
hours of phone calls and talking with professionals, such as
the head of the National Animal Supplement Council (thank
you, Bill!), I realized it was probably best to
manufacture our supplements here in the United States.
Our Start Up Partners - Ensuring Quality
With help from the Small
Business Development Center in Mount Vernon, my
accountant (thank you Greg), and a lot of
research into supplement manufacturing, we decided to
partner with
Yellow Emperor
in Eugene, Oregon. They specialize in herbal
tinctures, source high quality organic herbs and are able
to make sure that our tinctures will be
Oregon Tilth Organic Certified
. We are starting with THREE products: one for
inflammation/mobility, one for kidney health and one for
calming/relaxation. All of the formulas are proprietary
creations designed with the support of a family from South
Africa who has over 40 years in the supplment-healing
industry and an animal specialist. The herbs are being
sourced as we speak and the research and development process
should begin with the next few weeks. Our timeline is to
have the products ready for sales by October!
What about the Name?
What about the Name?
Arogya is a Sanskrit word for whole health - health of
mind, body and spirit. It is something that Gareth and I
value and have strived to live. We have also found that
pets contribute to our own "arogya". We believe
it is also important for our pets to experience whole
health and the major impetus behind the creation of these
products. Thus, Arogya Paws is our pet
supplement line (you can soon check out Arogya
PureSelf for us humans!) all part of Arogya Living
LLC "Supporting Whole Health for Pets, People
and the Planet".
