STEPHEN & LAUREL BROWN FOUNDATION, INC hasn't added a story.
At Science in Congregations, we believe the church is strengthened by engaging science. We look to a day when science accompanies Scripture as a tool for discipleship, catalyzes expressions of worship, illustrates sermons, elucidates biblical teachings, and supplements theological wisdom for the life of the world. We even wonder if wrestling with science might draw some of the “Nones” and the “Dones” back to our Christian communities.
Who are we?
Science in Congregations is a movement of Christian ministries and leaders engaging science for the life of the church. We are building on 10 years of leading programs like Scientists in Congregations and Science and Theology for Emerging Adult Ministries (STEAM). Having resourced 65 ministries, we are now positioning ourselves for the future. (You can read about our team here .) That future will include a new organizational brand, new programs and, with your generous support, a new website.
What do we do?
In our effort to strengthen the church through its engagement with science, we are pursuing the following four priorities:
- Build a Movement: We seek to create a movement of Christian ministries engaging science for the life of the church. As this movement grows, we will gain the collective wisdom of its members and will become a network to support ministry leaders and scientists.
- Leverage a Relational Model: Relationships are essential to effective ministry. We believe this is also true of matters like science and faith. We seek to foster relationships between ministry leaders and scientists that allow them to grow in Christ and be empowered to engage science for the benefit of the church.
- Host Events: A movement based on relationships needs opportunities to meet, to fellowship, to worship, to learn, and to support and be supported.
- Provide Resources: Faith and science is complicated terrain as few individuals have formal training in both. And even when they do, they don’t know all aspects of either domain. So we will collect resources on our new website while we continue to produce our weekly newsletter and maintain our Facebook page.
How can you help?
There are two ways you can help us. First, contribute to this campaign and help us raise $10,000 so we can build and populate a new website that includes those resources the church can use to better engage science. All donations are tax-deductible. Second, sign up for our newsletter and spread the word about our work. You can do that by word of mouth, by forwarding the newsletter, or by interacting with our Facebook content.
How will we strengthen the church through engaging science?
Join us as we reveal our ideas in the coming weeks and months. But know that whatever we do, we do with and for the body of Christ. The only way we can fulfill our mission of strengthening the church through engagement with science is by working together, and you are an important member of our team. Whether you provide leadership for the church, in the academy, or within industry, we invite you to journey with us as we seek fresh approaches.
Please consider donating. Join the movement of those who love Jesus and are inspired by what science reveals about God’s creation.
Together, let’s dream of a day when science is no longer perceived as a barrier to faith, but instead can be of benefit to the work of the church.
Science in Congregations is generously hosted by Upper House, an initiative of the Stephen & Laurel Brown Foundation.
