HELP ISCP BUILD A PANGOLIN REHAB ENCLOSURE.
The Pangolin could go extinct before most people realize it exists.
Pangolins are the most illegally poached mammal in the world – more than rhinos and elephants combined! Over 1 million pangolins have been poached from the wild and illegally traded in the past decade. The Pangolin is not cute and cuddly like an Orangutan or Slow Loris but beautiful and passive Critically Endangered rainforest creatures.
Most countries have laws protecting pangolins but lack of enforcement and light penalties have allowed for unabated poaching and smuggling. According to the IUCN, two species are “Critically Endangered”, two are “Endangered”, and four are “Vulnerable” to extinction primarily due to international trade.
The Indonesian Species Conservation Programme (ISCP) have been building a small Slow Loris Rehabilitation Centre in South Sumatra and would like to build a natural pangolin enclosure to temporarily house illegally kept pangolins which have been confiscated and need somewhere to be housed whilst their health is assessed before released back to the forest. There is no centre for Pangolins to go to in the area if any are rescued or confiscated so this is much needed.
Pangolins are elusive, nocturnal, rarely appreciated and barely understood.
When it's frightened, it actually curls up into a roly-poly ball. It is not aggressive.
The pangolin could go extinct before most people realize it exists.
Pangolins - two species of which are endangered and all of which are protected by international treaty are trafficked by the thousands for their scales, which are boiled off their bodies for use in traditional medicine; for their meat, which is a high-end delicacy and for their blood, which is seen as a healing tonic.
The approximate number trafficked over a two-year period was around 200,000
No one knows how many pangolins are left in the wild but scientists and activists say the number is shrinking fast.
By making a donation you can help us build a natural enclosure to ensure a safe place for confiscated Pangolins to be, to have their health assessed and if ready, released straight back into the rainforest. Every donation large or small helps. The government of Indonesia is not going to fund this, the local people can’t afford it so we have to raise the funds ourselves. Please help us help the Pangolins of Sumatra who get a second chance.
We need to raise $6,000 to build the enclosure, buy specialized equipment, fund the annual wage of 1 staff to monitor the pangolins and slow loris, buy transport cages for release and other miscellaneous items.
With Compassion & Soul has assisted the Indonesian Species Conservation Programme to build Slow Loris Cages and steps to climb down the steep, muddy mountain side and now we are assisting them by raising funds to help build this Pangolin Enclosure. We hope you will help us build this centre from the ground up.
If you can help us we thank you in anticipation. We have nothing to give in return other than the knowledge you are helping future wildlife and that you have been able to donate and help build this centre which one day you can visit if you wish.
