Aidah Nantaale is commonly known as "The Washing Lady". At 43 years old she lives in Lungujja on the outskirts of Kampala city Uganda. Locals call this community Kosovo.
Aidah was born in southern Uganda. She moved to Kampala with the hope of a bright future. She wanted to start her own family and gain the independence she had always dreamed of.
Unfortunately, life didn't turn out as Aidah had imagined. For the past 13 years Aidah has lived with her family in a very small 2-room house in a poor area of Kosovo. Today, her small 2-room home is a simple shelter for Aidah and her six children.
Aidah is a single parent becasue her husband abandoned her while she was delivering her last child. The deep trauma and harsh reality of her situation became very real to her as she healed from childbirth. She would quickly make her mind up to provide for her family in whatever way she was able.
For many years now, Aidah has washed cloths daily to earn money. On a good day, washing will earn about 7000 Ugandan shillings (less that $2 USD). Aidah's goal each day is to provide one meal for her family.
Education for these children is a fantasy. They help with chores and then just rattle around the community. With no school and no constructive options, these childrens futures are at serious risk.
Over the years, Aidah's hands have being heavily impacted by the harsh soaps she uses. They are wrinkled and swollen. There is not one day where Aidah doen't feel pain in her hands.
92Hands is a group of young people who care about their neighbours. This youth group wishes to help Aidah establish a small store where she can sell groceries. A store could replace Aidah's dependancy on washing and even raise enough funds to help her provide education for her children. This store could transform life for the entire family.
And Aidah is not the only single mom struggling in this community. There are many single mothers with many children here. 92Hands is raising this fund to transform the future of many families like Aidah's.
