Dog4U, Inc. hasn't added a story.
Charlie AKA Gilligan, a starving and severely dehydrated 1 to 2 year old Labrador mix, was seen at dusk near Columbia on an extremely busy section of US Highway 1 in South Carolina by Dog4U, Inc. volunteers. He was standing there searching for food with his collar hanging loose like a necklace from the extreme amount of weight he had lost. Bystanders were throwing him crackers but even they drove away leaving him behind. The chances he would not be struck by a car were almost zero, on top of that temperatures have plummeted due to the Polar Vortex and his chances of survival over the next week of way below freezing nights were almost zero. He disappeared for thirty minutes and reappeared in the middle of the highway. Another Dog4U, Inc. volunteer was dispatched to the scene, this shy boy was rescued moments before being hit by a fast moving vehicle. The volunteer had to stand in the road waving her arms frantically to be noticed, a close call for both her and the dog. Charlie, as he is now called by his foster dad, had the first warm night’s sleep he has had in a very long time. He was taken to Spears Creek Veterinary Clinic to see the wonderful Dr. Wendy King. He had blood work done, a full and thorough exam, fecal check and heartworm test. His blood work is very much in line with that of a truly emaciated dog, all of his organ values are low. On top of that he is microfilaria positive and needs to start heartworm treatment. His body score is 1 (the worst possible score) on a 1 to 5 scale; the vet said he would not have made it much longer. This pup was not microchipped and there are no reports of a missing dog by his description even though he was wearing a collar. Charlie is good with dogs and cats and has happily spent two nights with his foster dad, he is now living on the coast of the Carolinas enjoying good food and home cooking while he gains his strength to go through the heartworm treatment process. This will be a long haul for Charlie, on intake we were not sure if he would be a rescue or a hospice patient. Charlie is nowhere near out of the woods yet but he is warm and feeling love and affection for the first time in a long, long time. Charlie has a wonderful home waiting for him somewhere once he is healthy, we just have to get him through the next few months and help him recuperate, thrive and grow.
