The Lexington site of Blue Ridge Autism and Achievement Center has a big problem! There is just not enough room for a playground. Imagine that! No place for our students to play outside. Although our dedicated staff has been very creative, we miss the opportunity to spend time in the great outdoors.
Recently, a few engineering students (AKA: our HEROES) from Washington and Lee University heard of our plight and headed over to our BRAAC school to see what could be done! These amazing 4 students, along with the support of their incredible professor and advisers, scoped out the property and designed a nature trail! We are thrilled that this trail will soon to be blazed through the back woods of the property for our students to enjoy! The W&L students have designed the project, met with contractors, determined the medium to be used, considered ADA needs and developed a budget. The cost of the project is $7,000. Half of the money has been raised, and we need YOUR help to raise the remaining $3500.
Over the next few months we would love to see this amazing transformation begin and by summer have a wonderful nature trail to enjoy! There will soon be sensory stations, areas for large motor activities and benches to enjoy along the two paths. Needless to say, we cannot wait!
