Central Canada Women's Football League hasn't added a story.
Imagine not being able to play a sport because of your gender. Women have made great strides in many facets of society, yet still trail behind when it comes to sport. There are very few, if any opportunities, for women to play tackle football. This, however, is no longer the case with the development of the Central Canada Women’s Football League (CCWFL).
The CCWFL, a not-for-profit organization, is the first women’s tackle football league in Ontario. The idea for this league came from founder, Aaron Ellis. Aaron has a daughter, Tianna, who played for her local high school tackle football team. Being the only girl on the team, Tianna felt that she was not given the same opportunities that everyone else on the team was given. Furthermore, Tianna tried out for local community tackle football teams, where once again, she was the only female. She struggled with the same hardships, not being played, and being last in line to step on the field, despite her dedication.
Not only was Tianna not given the opportunity to play in game situations, she did not have the chance to feel the comradery of being part of the team. She had to change in a room dedicated only to her. While this may sound nice, many who play sports can attest that the most fun happens in the locker room. It is where bonds are built between teammates, where those lifelong memories are formed. The only thing Tianna will remember will be sitting in a room, by herself, alienated, hearing the laughter and cheers from the boys change room next door.
Being a single father, Aaron has a deep connection with Tianna and could sense her frustration, despite her commitment to the team. After a three year struggle of not being able to play football, and pouring her blood, sweat and tears onto the field, Tianna’s father decided to put these hardships to an end. The solution: a women’s only tackle football league. A league that is dedicated to women, to express themselves through the sport of tackle football. Now, with the birth of the CCWFL, women have an opportunity and the right to play tackle football.
The CCWFL is a league that promotes female empowerment, societal equality and fair opportunities for everyone, despite gender, age, size, or any other source of discrimination that women have had to face in the past. While Toronto had a tackle football team, this league is different. Our athletes wear complete uniforms and will play tackle football just like men. The CCWFL provides women a chance to showcase their athletic skills, without having to showcase their bodies. Uniforms and equipment will be comparable to those of the NFL and CFL athletes.
The CCWFL plans to start practicing in September/October, 2014 and games to follow shortly thereafter. You will be contributing to several components. First, your contribution will help fund one of the “growing leaders of social change in Ontario” – Chris Rudge, CEO, Toronto Argonauts. By contributing to this cause, you will assist in the CCWFL’s “ability to break down gender barriers [and] provide equality to women” – Glenn Gibson, President, Hamilton Tiger-Cats.
Funds raised will be going to start up costs of the league. Some of the startup costs include equipment (helmets, shoulder pads, and practice/training equipment), league uniforms, and field rentals for games and practices.
The CCWFL needs your assistance in making a historic step forward for women in sport. By contributing to this cause, you will help us make this first step by supporting us in becoming the first women’s tackle football league in Ontario!
