Parker needs hip surgery.  He's a 14 month old Australian Shepherd who was turned in to the animal shelter in Florence, AL with his two eight month old brothers for chasing goats. The BARK volunteer who picked him up noticed Pepper was favoring his right rear leg. His paperwork said that he limped because of an injury he got in an animal attack as a pup. You can see him holding his foot up in his shelter photo.

I got Parker on Monday, December 30 and scheduled an appointment for him with Dr. Bill Van Hooser at Carriage Hills Animal Clinic & Pet Hospital on New Year's Eve.  Luckily he's heartworm negative and in good health except for his leg.  He's a really sweet boy and made friends quickly at the vet's office.

Sadly, X-rays showed that Parker had a broken femur.  His leg healed improperly with the ball that fits in the hip joint not lined up with the end of the bone. This means that poor Parker has spent most of his life in pain.  If his owners had taken him to the vet Parker's leg could have been fixed relatively easily.  Now he needs an FHO, which is a femoral head ostectomy. The vet will cut off the head of the femur and afterwards Parker will go through physical therapy to build up the muscles so they can hold the leg in.  This link tells how the surgery works.  FHO

This is Parker's X-ray.  You can tell where the bone on the lefthand side of the film doesn't look like the bone on the right.  He's scheduled for surgery January 3, 2014 and it will cost $1,200 - $1,500. BARK needs your help to pay for his surgery and physical therapy.

Usually, being taken to an animal shelter is the worst thing in a dog's life. For Parker it means a chance at a life without pain.

Please chip in! Any amount helps.
