Lucky Paws Rescue hasn't added a story.
Jacque is a purebred french bulldog who was bounced from breeder, to 3 more homes until his 3rd placement got him into the hands of caring people. Everyone taking Jacque before, just wanted to breed him without even considering his health, or the expense involved.
When the previous homes couldn't even pay the pet deposit to keep him, they'd give him to the next person, who had the same problem. The breeder told them they could get $2500 per puppy and everyone saw dollar signs.
The sad part about this, is that Jacque was living in a crate his entire life, and each person was told how easy he was to keep and breed by doing this. Medicine was passed along with Jacque, which expired in 2008. They were just told to put it in his eyes and he'd be fine.
Jacque wasn't fine. He was in pain. His eyes hurt to the point that they started to cloud over. He needed surgery on both eyes for entropian eyelids. Something his breeder should have taken care of - especially when selling pups for $2500 each. Common for bullies, but painful when left untreate, and yes, it's passed along to the pups. The eyelids turn in, rubbing against the eye. Imagine feeling like you have an eyelash in your eye 24/7 your entire life of 4+ years.
The 3rd home Jacque went into contacted Lucky Paws, as we rescue bulldogs. We were asked to find him a loving home. When Jacque went in for his vet appointment, it was confirmed that he needed the surgery for his eyes. The vet also recommended soft palette surgery for Jacque because his breathing was so poor. He couldn't last a full minute, playing with a ball, without having to stop for air.
The discounted cost for surgery was $600, which would be offered to the family adopting Jacque, as Lucky Paws could not afford this, and at the time, it was only recommended. Normally, this surgery would be over $1000.
When Jacque went in for his neuter and eye surgery, the vet had to perform the soft palette surgery as well. She was afraid that Jacque would die, as his throat was collapsing while under. This is all due to poor breeding.
To help us out, our vet charged half the cost. Our total bill for Jacque was only $500, for neuter, teeth cleaning (1 cracked tooth pulled) double eye surgery and soft palette surgery. Oh - and she removed a lump she found on his rear. That is another $160 for a biopsy to make sure Jacque doesn't have cancer.
We couldn't ask for a better deal, with everything that was done for Jacque. As a free dog, anyone else having this done could have spent thousands. Most people would just let him keep suffering. The soft palette surgery will extend his life and he woke up with a funny look on his face, because he could actually breathe.
Lucky Paws takes in bulldogs that typically require extensive vet care. We also take in senior dogs.
We are asking for help with the $500 vet expenses, which allows us to continue helping the dogs that typically cost more than their adoption fee.
Jacque did find a loving home, but his adoption fee did not cover his cost. We also recently had an 8 yr old English Bulldog as well, that required the removal of a tumor. Winter months can be difficult for rescues, as people are not looking for animals when it's cold, and they dump those that have medical needs, due to the cost.
Bulldog's come with many health issues, and they are very expensive. This is why they end up being rehomed again and again.
