Southern Siberian Rescue hasn't added a story.
Southern Siberian Rescue is a group of dedicated volunteers responsibly rescuing Siberian Huskies in need throughout North Carolina and surrounding states. Our sole purpose and priority is to help unwanted, misunderstood, abandoned or neglected Siberians find homes. We do this by providing needed health care, rehabilitation and training for all our foster dogs and carefully screening potential adopters.
Miss Naomi came to us as a 2 year old stray out of Alexander County Animal Shelter in Taylorsville, NC. Regardless of the buck shots throughout her body, she is a happy go lucky, sweet Siberian Husky. Early Friday evening (March 24), her foster parents noticed some uncomfortable and unusual behavior with her. She was pacing, whining and yelping in possible pain, stretching to eleviate some discomfort and just could not settle down. A quick feel of her stomach, Foster Dad Michael noticed her stomach was tight so they took her to VSH ER with concern. There she had x-rays that indicated she may have splenic torsion, but the radiologist was not able to confirm that. Splenic torsion occurs when the spleen rotates/twists on itself thus preventing blood drainage, causing subsequent enlargement of the spleen. The cause of splenic torsion is unknown, however, is believed to occur after stomach bloat or partial intermittent stomach twisting. We had her transferred to Animal Emergency Hospital for VSH's recommended monitoring and pain meds for the night. Animal Emergency noticed a more severe concern and recommended surgery because her platelets were low and the longer she went without surgery, the greater her risk. We sent her to surgery about 2 a.m. to removed her spleen, which was indeed twisted.
Miss Naomi made it through surgery but still with concern. Her platelets remain low and her blood pressure was high. We couldn't see her on Saturday because Animal Emergency vets didn't want her blood pressure to escalate, putting her at more risk. Her blood pressure did recover late last night where she could have visitors and Foster Parents, Janine and Michael, were able to see her about 10-11 pm. Miss Naomi was happy to see them and ready to come home but medically, she isn't ready.
Sunday morning update is that Miss Naomi is still not eating so x-rays were done, only to find that she has a full stomach of Friday's dinner that she hasn't passed. She has now been administered meds to help her poo and clear her stomach because she's not been able to do so on her own. This brings more concern in that she may have a blockage, requiring another surgery. Sigh. I called to check on her an hour ago and thankfully she has poo'd some so hopefully her system is adjusting and she won't need further surgery.
Please find it in your heart to donate any amount to help with Miss Naomi's surgery. She's a young, happy, healthy girl with a very rare diagnosis of splenic torsion. Splenectomy's are very rare and we have elected to send her spleen to pathology to see if there is disease or underlying issue to cause her needed surgery. No donation amount is too small to make a difference for Miss Naomi and future SSR foster dogs. Thank you in advance for your consideration, concern and donation on her behalf.
