The number of traffic accidents has been greatly increasing every year. Police Annual Crime reports, 3,124 people died from roads accidents in 2012 and 2,937 in 2013. According to the World Health Organisation’s road safety assessments, Uganda has one of the highest accident rates in the world, with 19,870 accidents in 2012, 19,867 accidents in 2007 to 22,272 accidents in 2011 and 18,368 in 2013. Costing government 1.8 trillion in Gross Domestic Product. Thousands of people are losing their lives across Uganda due to a rise in particular types of crimes or negligence by those entrusted with the lives of others, such as drivers.
The number of fatalities in Uganda is quite high compared to other African countries, as the road traffic accident death rate is 10.1 per 100,000 populations
In 2011, the total number of vehicles involved in crashes was 35,716. Cars accidents were most involved in road traffic accidents with 12,095 cars (33%), while there were 8,743 motorcycles (24.5%).
We need US$150,000 for a country wide campaign with all the stakeholders involved to sensitise the public and drivers, motorcycle (Boda Boda) riders about the safety of the passengers.
Main Problems that need an urgent address through open campaigns:
- There is no single organization with overall responsibility. Duties are not clearly defined.
- There are many ministries, government agencies and other organizations involved.
- Rampand Bribery and Corruption among the motorists and traffic officers
- There seems to be a pronounced lack of cooperation and coordination.
- There are several deficiencies concerning the present national safety organization.
- Regional and local safety organizations do not appear to work effectively and no awarness campaigns.
- There is little cooperation between public agencies and private sector
